  • It must have been a strange feeling for younger Liverpool supporters. Experiencing defeat. Atletico Madrid returned to doing what they used to do on a regular basis, defending as though they had 22 players and not 11, scoring an early goal and not letting the opposition get in behind the defence. A knack Atletico appeared to have lost of late. They will take the same approach when they travel to play the return leg at Anfield. I hope Liverpool win the second leg and progress. Not because I am supporter, I am not. But because I believe in positive, attacking . . .

  • The last few days of football betting have gone rather well for myself and any VG Tips subscribers picking up on some of the winning football bets. You can read all about them via this link https://vgtips.co.uk/7-1-double-and-more-winning-football-tips/

The big football story of the past week has been UEFA banning Manchester City from Champions League participation for two years. Many column inches and numerous broadcast hours have been spent debating . . .

  • The 7/1 away day double bet for wins by West Brom and Preston North End paid off in midweek. That was a welcome winning bet when, too often recently, one club would let me down in a bigger accumulator.

It is looking to me as though many decisive issues will not be settled until the last days of the football season. That includes promotion from the Championship to the Premier League. To my surprise, West Brom have opened up a six point gap at the top of the table. All of a sudden, it's looking good for the . . .

  • It was an ill wind, or rather Storm Ciara, that gave Manchester City and West Ham a day off on Sunday. Hard to know which manager will be most pleased with that match being postponed.

It offers West Ham players a rest and an escape from what was likely to be a confidence sapping mauling in Manchester. Perhaps the game will now be rescheduled for a week in which City have a more important Champions League fixture. If so, that may help relegation threatened West Ham as City would be more likely to rest their best players.

    Watford once again . . .

  • At this stage of the football season, just after the transfer window has closed, my rest of season football tips for promotion, relegation etc are a mixture of the more obvious and some bigger price speculative bets.

You should read what I have to say and offer and then make your own mind up. Even at this stage of the season things can happen to radically alter the fortunes of a football team. A vital player picking up a season ending injury. A goalscorer currently injured rising like a phoenix from the ashes and banging in goals. Even a manager . . .

  • Oh Wolverhampton Wanderers! Why could you not have scored one little goal at Old Trafford. Just the one. I wasn't asking for much. After all, the other the three terms in my proposed 51/1 accumulator had already won for myself and members of VG Tips. A one goal victory against a very average Manchester United would have ensured we were all paid out handsomely.

Annoying when that happens. I could have cashed out in the first half and at odds of 14/1. I have never cashed out on a football bet. I was a little tempted to . . .

  • Wayne Rooney scored for Derby County in midweek and, not for the first time of late, I heard back that he was by far and away their best player, despite his advancing years. But even he could not stop the Rams from self destructing. They lost away to bottom of the table Luton Town, scoring an own goal and having a player sent off in the process. Derby are facing a potential points deduction from the EFL. If he stays, I expect Rooney will be player/manager next season.

Derby spoilt my proposed 12/1 treble. The other two teams . . .

  • My generation of football fan despairs of the increasing efforts by the wealthier clubs to get rid of FA Cup replays. Just listening to what a replay at Anfield will mean for League 1 Shrewsbury Town confirms that, for those outside the top two divisions, a Cup replay against a big club can bring in enough cash to make so many improvements. It can be a lifeline.

The top clubs, of course, would get rid of the League Cup and the FA Cup if only they could. They want more Champions League games and a Premier League reduced to 18 . . .

  • For more years than I can recall, I have often tipped a draw between Chelsea and Arsenal. It has paid out several times.

I tipped them to draw in midweek at odds of 3/1 and Arsenal fought back to secure a 2-2 draw despite being reduced to ten men after former Chelsea defender David Luiz was sent off.

The English midweek fixtures produced lots of goals and some crucial wins. Especially so for Premier League teams trying to avoid relegation.

Bournemouth secured a rare win. Aston Villa scored a 95th minute winner against fellow relegation candidates Watford. That . . .

  • A 16/1 winning accumulator rounded off a profitable weekend of football tips for members of VG Tips. Nottingham Forest came from behind to beat Luton Town 3-1. Forest were the fourth team in my English/Scottish accumulator. On Saturday, Rotherham, Clyde and Ayr had already won. The first winning accumulator in 2020, it won’t be the last.

Single winning bets also included Norwich winning for only the fourth time this season at odds of 6/5. The draw between Tottenham and Watford at odds of 13/5 was a nice return. Sunderland won again and this time . . .
