  • In this world of podcasts coming out weekly, there is one all football supporters should listen to. The Price of Football was the brainchild of Kieran Maquire. A Brighton fan but, more importantly, a man who studies the accounts of all football clubs worldwide. He delves deep into the figures and reveals which clubs are spending wisely, and which are not.

If you care about football beyond who scores the winning goal for your team, follow Kieran on Twitter and subscribe to The Price of Football podcast. It's relatively new so you can catch up from episode one and . . .

  • Domestic action in the top leagues takes a back seat again over the next few days as it's once again time for the Euro 2020 qualifying games.

The home nations all have important matches over the coming days. Wales, Scotland and England will all be seeking to do well. England manager Gareth Southgate has been criticised by some for dropping Raheem Sterling from the England squad to play Montenegro on Thursday.

It seems the Manchester City striker was involved in a dust up with Joe Gomez at the England training ground. A continuation of a dispute they had when . . .

  • Valued member of VG Tips Jamie has, like me, been cursing the odd result of late. A Barnsley equaliser deep into injury time last weekend prevented us being paid out on a Bristol City win. Then, only last night, Manchester City failed to win their second meeting with Atalanta, so bringing down my football accumulator that was otherwise going well.

As mentioned in my preview write up earlier in the week, there was always a chance Pep Guardiola would send a weakened squad to Italy. Having said that, on paper at least, the Manchester City team that began that game . . .

  • If I hear another debate about VAR I will not be responsible for my actions. I am sick of seeing it. Weary of hearing about it. Only last week I wrote about this on the VG Tips website (where all opinion content is free for anyone to read). What happens last weekend? More VAR controversy.

A player is about to be shown a yellow card for a fairly ordinary foul, a tackle from behind. The ref sees the horrific injury to the fouled player . . .

  • I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome newer members to VG Tips. Some love football more than racing. For some it is the other way around. What all of my subscribers have in common is a desire to get the better of the bookie. It can be done. I know. I've done so every year since 1998.

It's not as easy to do so as it once was, that much is true. So many bookies have merged, making the betting market less competitive. They are meaner when pricing their betting markets. They are far more cautious . . .

  • There are a thousand and one football podcasts out there, available to those who like to listen rather than watch. Many good, informative and entertaining ones. A new one I alert you to is called 'The Price of Football.'

If you want proof of where the game of football has gone wrong, listen to episodes 1, 2 and 3.

The latest episode deals with the owners of Manchester United, the dastardly Glazers. They borrowed 770 million pounds to buy Manchester United Football Club. As football finance expert Kieran Maguire says: "They didn't have a bean. The American banks they . . .

  • Sometimes it pays top be bold. To bet on what many consider the unexpected.

Saturday's more obvious results were anything but. A few went against me. But, come Sunday and Monday, two of the football bets I suggested that were available at odds of 3/1 did pay off.

Manchester Unuted got that draw with Liverpool, which few thought possible. But more often than not I've backed that fixture to end as a stalemate. Another season passes without Liverpool winning at Old Trafford.

Pre-season I tipped Sheffield United to stay up in their first season back in . . .

  • Thankfully we return to domestic action after an International break that brought with it some surprising results and appalling scenes on the terraces in Bulgaria.

Credit to Gareth Southgate. The England manager handled the situation well and spoke candidly and honestly about how England's black footballers were able to handle the abuse they received because they have grown hardened to it on home soil. A sorry state of affairs and a sad truth.

Having watched football as a spectator since the 60's, and covered for newspapers and television from the 70's, I can recall fine footballers such . . .

  • So managers are losing their jobs and it's only October!

Barnsley Football Club could not find it within themselves to thank the popular with the fans Daniel Stendel for his service, most notably getting the club promoted out of League 1 last season. A fine achievement, all things considered. Officially, Stendel resigned. The brief statement from the club did not include any of the usual thanks to the outgoing manager. It was, frankly, rude and lacked class.

The form of the team has suffered after an initial promising opening game of the season when they beat Fulham. They haven . . .

  • Take a bow Robert Ryan. He offered seven tips for football in Scotland last weekend - and all seven paid out. Some effort.

I have been following Robert Ryan on Twitter for a few years. I noticed how good a punter he was on football in Scotland and in England. Clearly Robert loves his football and has a keen eye when it comes to spotting value in the betting market.

So I asked him to come on board and offer his own betting selections for matches in Scotland. After all, knowledge is power and Robert is clearly knowledgeable about football across . . .
