  • So the last accumulator paid out, but not as a 12/1 acca. Only at odds of 3.5/1. That was because the last of the four games in the accumulator, Oldham v Tranmere, was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. When this happens, bookies make that game 'void.'Time was, they carried your bet over to when that match was rescheduled. Not these days.

Never mind. A win is a win and West Ham, Liverpool and Aston Villa did the business for me and members of VG Tips.

Those Premier League and Championship teams that are in good . . .

  • In midweek the winning tips were Preston beating Middlesbrough at odds of 3/1, Leeds winning at Reading 3/4, Lincoln City at 5/6 and Liverpool winning at Bayern Munich (which I had a decent bet on) at odds of 11/4. Frankly, I thought that price was too good to be true. So it proved.

Four English teams make up the eight that go into the quarter finals of the Champions League. I hope the draw does not lead to them playing against each other. For many years, English clubs did not make the final stages of the . . .

  • The winning football bets last weekend included my NAP. I thought Cheltenham to beat bottom of the table Notts County at odds of 29/20. That represented great value. They won 4-1. Also in League 2, MK Dons were a winning vote for members of VG Tips. They won 1-3 at Macclesfield. That was a best price 21/20 winning tip.

In the Championship, Preston won as tipped at odds of 13/8. Their victory at neighbouring Blackburn leaves Preston in with every chance of grabbing a play off place late in the season. Leeds continue to march . . .

  • How the once mighty have fallen. It's the end of an era for Real Madrid. Anyone back Ajax to win in Spain? If so, you must have got a good price.

I actually tipped the young and talented Ajax team to win the first leg on home soil in Holland and they were unlucky to lose that tie 1-2. But I cannot claim to have imagined they would win the second leg 1-4 in Madrid, despite the recent poor form of Real Madrid.

One of their players had told a former Sky Sports colleague of mine that . . .

  • A great weekend of winning single football tips for members of VG Tips. 9 winners from 11 selections. They included two draws, which are never the easiest to predict.

Tottenham v Arsenal drew and that bet paid off at odds of 14/5. The Steel City derby on Monday night saw Sheffield Wednesday hold neighbours United to a draw at odds of 5/2.

The sides tipped to win who did precisely that were:- Lincoln City at 2/1, Norwich 6/5, Barnsley 5/6, Brighton 5/6, Luton 1/2, Wolves 1/2 and Chelsea 7/12.

    I had . . .

  • Were you in any doubt that there is no such thing as a sure thing, then surely the victory by Huddersfield Town over Wolves in midweek set you straight about that one.

Pity the Huddersfield supporters who left their ground before the final whistle. They've not seen their team win for ages and they will be watching Championship football next season. On Tuesday an injury time goal saw Huddersfield beat a Wolves side who seem to do best against better opponents than they do against the teams below them in the league.

Their defeat in West Yorkshire meant I . . .

  • A goalkeeper refusing to be substituted was the talking point of last weekend. Chelsea football club tries to paper over the cracks of a dressing room that is clearly not happy with their manager. I like the cut of his jib but we know Chelsea do not stick by their managers very long and I expect they have a replacement waiting in the wings for the end of the season.

In my years of covering football I have come across some amazing incidents. I obviously can't name the footballer of yesteryear who deliberately got him sent off early in . . .

  • February is often a crucial month for football teams. It's always a busy one.

Those Premier League clubs left in European competitions are playing almost non stop these days. Manchester City, even with ten men, managed to fight back against Schalke and win their away Champions League tie 2-3 in midweek. Next up for City, a League Cup final at Wembley.

Manchester City really could win the League Cup, FA Cup and Premier League. Lots of people have backed that treble. Some punters have even backed them to win those titles and the Champions League. It's possible . . .

  • Betting on football has never been more popular. It has also never been more unpredictable.

A team bottom of the table beating one at or near the top of the same division is no longer a rare event. Indeed, some weeks it's the norm.

Some things you can rely on. Walsall will never do what I want them to. For more years than I care to recall, Walsall win when I back them to lose, and fail to win when I support them to do so. I've said it before. I shall say it again. I give up . . .

  • That was an eventful Champions League.

Manchester United not good enough to cope with a PSG side that had important players out injured. I guess I and some others underestimated how the French side would cope with the absence of Cavani and Neymar. To my eyes, they looked better off without the latter. United's defending was poor and the goals, though nicely executed, were in part due to some poor defending by Manchester United. PSG also kept a clean sheet, a rare event in the Champions League.

Tottenham did very well to beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley . . .
