I shall be at the Hennessy Gold Cup – a race in which I tipped the 20/1 winner back in 2013. Triolo D’Alene was trained by Nicky Henderson and many punters fancy his Bobs Worth to win the race at the end of this month.
I first saw a tweet from the wise man Joe McNally on November 7th in which he said that, at 16/1, Bobs Worth might be worth a punt. The best price now is a mere 9/1.
There are a few candidates to land this competitive race. The very impressive Coneygree is 4/1 with a run, but it now looks doubtful that he will be at Newbury. Saphir Du Rheu is the current market leader at 7/2 and is well fancied by the Paul Nicholls yard.
I have long been a fan of Smad Place (currently 9/1) and hope he runs well. At a bigger price, The Druids Nephew will be of interest to each way backers at 16/1.
Nicky Henderson was asked about why Bobs Worth had been entered in the race.
He said: “We’ve been tempted by the handicapper, who has dropped him 7lb lower than when he won his Hennessy off 160 and has given him a chance. As a previous Hennessy and Gold Cup winner, looking at his weight (10st 7lb) that is quite attractive.”
I did place a small each way bet on Bobs Worth at 14/1. I probably would not have done so at the current 9/1. There are plenty of other horses with a legitimate chance of winning.
As for any other bet I might have in the race, I shall wait and see what the ground conditions are nearer the time. The Hennessy Gold Cup is still a couple of weeks away.
A large amount of rainfall is forecast for later this week. That could threaten the meeting at Haydock Park this Friday and the big race on Saturday, the Betfair Chase, for which the soft ground loving Silviniaco Conti is the 11/10 favourite.
