Bobby Tambling pays tribute to Frank Lampard

Bobby Tambling was a Chelsea favourite at a time when the club was not short of idols. I really liked watching him play football. Maybe a handful of times live and more often on TV. Definitely my type of midfield player. And the similarities between him and the current favourite of Chelsea fans, Frank Lampard, do not end there.

If all goes according to plan the man they call super Frank will soon equal or surpass the 202 goals scored by the tenacious and talented Tambling.

A superb achievement by both players who, despite playing the game in very different eras, have something else in common. Not at all flashy, they have been model professionals who have earned respect from the supporters at Stamford Bridge and from many others who watch the game.

So I was pleased to read in the Daily Telegraph that Lampard has been in regular contact with Tambling, a man who has been confined to a sick bed in Ireland for several months. I am not at all surprised that Frank called Tambling once he had joined Bobby in scoring 200 goals for the club.

Frank Lampard is not only a top player. He is a top bloke.

Tambling told the Telegraph: “It was lovely to hear from Frank.” Ever since this problem has started, I’ve spoken to Frank a number of times. I’ve been in bed for the last three months so I’ve got to rehabilitate myself to standing up and getting back to walking.

“Frank is always asking how I am and telling me to get well soon. He tells me to stay positive, take my time and that I will get better. He is a complete gentlemen and he knows that it has been a long haul.

“If you take what Frank has done personally and then add in what Chelsea have done as a team in the last 10 years, he must surely go down not just as one of the greats but probably the greatest player Chelsea has had.” This has been the greatest Chelsea team ever. He thinks like a striker, performs like a striker.

“I think that he will certainly get to the record now. He is a tremendous pro and great for the game.

“I’ve been very pleased to be the record holder,” he said. “It’s lovely but, in the end, you know that someone else will come along. That’s how it should be and who could be better than Frank Lampard? You couldn’t meet a nicer guy and he’s the best player Chelsea has probably ever produced.”

Chelsea football club has been fortunate to have such fine servants as Bobby Tambling and Frank Lampard.

And I consider myself lucky to have seen both play what they have each proved is a simple game.
