At the time of writing on Saturday, four races have taken place at Cheltenham.

The BetVictor Gold Cup was an incident packed race. Only six finished. Lots of hard luck stories including Rather Be, eho was going well when brought down by another faller - one of many who came to earth in the race. Here’s hoping they are all well.

Earlier in the day, Cracker Factory, a 7/1 each way tip, finished second so ensuring you got your stake back plus a little profit.

The second selection of the day was also a runner up. But, at 8 . . .

We won the first at Cheltenham on Friday when 11/2 tip The Young Master won with something to spare. Sky Pirate, my other each way choice in that race, may well have won but for being brought down by another horse two fences from home.

    After that... no joy.

Double Treasure surpsingly pulled up while Tiger Roll was clearly anchored by his heavy weight in the Cross Country race. As trainer Gordon Elliot said, Tiger Roll finished well in fourth and when he returns to Cheltenham in December and/or March, he will do so from level weights.

    The . . .

You know winter is coming when the November meeting at Cheltenham is upon us.

Dry weather is forecast for the three day meeting and I will be in touch with members old, new and returnees for all three days of a competitive race meeting.

Of course, it is still very early in the jumps season and some of those horses racing tomorrow are not expected to win by their trainers. They are being entered to get a race into them prior to potential big targets in the weeks ahead and with one eye in the Cheltenham Festival next March - the . . .

  • At the time of writing, no Premier League manager has been sacked so far this season. A pleasant surprise.

Sam Allardyce will have his mobile telephone ringtone on loud setting as he struts his stuff on the dancefloor of a Marbella nightclub.

Which club owner will call him, International Rescue fashion?

Southampton? Fulham? Those two struggling sides play each other at Craven Cottage on September 24th. The manager of each club has to be under the threat of the sack should their team lose that game.

But that is more than a week away. This midweek and weekend we have . . .

It was two winners from three selections on Thursday. I was pleased La Bague Au Roi won at odds of 15/8. But, as most of you know by now, I’m always trying to find one at a bigger price and looking for potential value in the betting market is my aim.

There are obvious short priced winners in the first two races over in Ireland at Naas on Saturday (Rhinestone and Footpad) but the odds on prices are too short to interest me. You could play a win only double, I suppose.

Too many odds on favourites lose . . .

The Big Bite, tipped at 3/1, won for us today as did 7/4 shot Chica Buena at Musselburgh. Two winners from four selections at this early stage of the season will do for me, especially so when the SP prices for each winner were shorter than the early prices available when I mailed members the night before racing.

One loyal member got in touch with me yesterday to ask when I would next be offering ante-post advice for one of the forthcoming feature races over the jumps. That will likely be for the former Hennessy Gold Cup . . .
