Only two races drew my attention on Friday. Chantry House won as expected and the price improved on the day. 5/6 was value about a winner that was going away at the closing stages of that opening race.

I would suggest you put the runner up in your notebooks. I had written favourably about the grey called Stolen Silver trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies. Had he been priced 9/1 when I sent out yesterday's selections, he would have been my each way option. But he was shorter then. Stolen Silver gave Chantry House a race and will . . .

Despite the winners I tipped last weekend, I did make a mistake I hadn't made for a long time. I simply studied too many races. That's the trouble with racing these days. They put all the best racing on a Saturday. Such days can be top heavy with quality and choice. The discipline is not to fall for every card. To resist betting in too many races. Less really can be more.

Last Saturday I allowed myself to be sucked in at too many meetings. Only myself to blame I was like a child with his face pressed . . .

  • Jim Smith died this week. Another football manager of yesteryear gone and a bloody good one at that. The list of clubs he managed is endless. The so called 'bald eagle' was in demand at a time when owners of football clubs were not obsessed with hiring coaches from abroad. When they didn't think a manager would be better simply because their surname ended in a vowel.

The reluctance of so called big clubs to even consider British managers these days is a reflection on how myopic football club Chairman can be. Brendan Rodgers is doing a great job . . .

  • As warned last week, new manager syndrome kicked in at Goodison Park last weekend. Amazing, isn't it? How footballers who have been awful for one manager for several weeks can suddenly come to life and remember what it takes to win football matches. Is it becuse they have achieved their mission, namely to have that manager sacked? Or is it because the outgoing manager was no good? or both?

Duncan Ferguson certainly got a tune out of the Everton players who faced Chelsea. Previously woeful, Everton sparked into life and got up and at the Chelsea boys, winning 3 . . .

It was three winners from four selections on Friday. A day when value was on offer despite some short prices.

How do you judge what is and isn't value? Subscribers to VG Tips know that I do not back horses at very short odds on prices.

Goshen was not that when I tipped him to win once again for trainer Gary Moore. 5/6 was available when I sent out my analysis and tips to members, as usual, the night before racing. You should take the chance to watch Goshen win today. He destroyed a . . .

Racing at Ludlow was abandoned on Wednesday due to fog and frost. Those who run the course had hoped the fog would lift, so left the decision late. That will have been a nuisance for the trainers who sent their horses to the racecourse.

So much work goes into preparing horses on a day of racing. The stable staff are up bright and early and it's not simply a matter of putting the horse in its box and taking to the road. But at least Ludlow made the right decision. Eventually.

At Haydock, meanwhile, the clerk of the course . . .

  • The winning midweek tips were Leciester City to win to nil at odds of 11/8. Jamie Vardy to score anytime for them at odds of 4/6. Both teams to score in the match between Chelsea and Aston Villa at 4/5 and a win for Wolves at odds of 4/5.

I didn't see Liverpool beating Everton 5-2 in the Merseyside derby. So often over the years, this clash of the teams on opposite sides of Stanley Park has resulted in a low scoring game. But Everton are so bad now that Liverpool went through them . . .

  • It's that time of the season. The time clubs choose to sack their managers. At the time of writing, Unai Emery has gone from Arsenal and Quique Sanchez Flores has been shown the exit door at Watford, for the second time.

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that the problem with underachieving football clubs may be higher up the pay scale? The owners. The players.  Earlier this week I heard football journalist John Cross allege that Emery was "a terrible choice" by Arsenal. I would actually say that Arsenal was a terrible choice by Emery. A coach who achieved . . .

Last Saturday threw up some surprising results and I had to make do with each way placed returns, including in the feature race at Newbury.

On Sunday, meanwhile, racing in Ireland delivered me three short price winners (2/1, 2/1 and 4/5). All good value for their victories. I was pleased to hear back from so many subscribers to VG Tips who had put those three in a triumphant treble. I only wish I had. Life got in the way. Annoying when that happens.

But winners are winners regardless of the prices and I have to say I . . .

You have to feel for those who run Doncaster racecourse. A two day meeting wiped out this week, with racing there on Saturday the latest casualty of the weather.

Much of South Yorkshire has been waterlogged of late. Having been a victim of flooding myself in years past, I feel for the residents of the area. It’s a horrible experience and, frankly, losing a race meeting is insignificant compared to having your home flooded.

Racing went ahead at Newbury on Friday and will do so again on Saturday when no rain is forecast for the Berkshire racecourse.

    I have . . .
