  • So Manchester City will be able to take part in the Champions League. The two year ban imposed by UEFA has been overturned. That's where being able to pay for very expensive lawyers can get you.

The ruling today must surely also mean that the so called Financial Fair Play system imposed by UEFA is dead in the water. If so, that will be good news for the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County. Their respective legal disputes with the English Football League have been prolonged. The EFL charged Wednesday on November 14th 2019 and Derby on January . . .

There were more non runners at Newmarket on Friday than there were people in attendance.

Inevitably very soft ground saw trainers withdraw horses they believed would not like the ground.

I cannot help but feel Magic Wand would have been very competitive in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. But that one was withdrawn leaving the two John Gosden stablemates to take each other on. Frankie Dettori chose to try and win from the front aboard Terebellum. Big mistake, Frankie. Stablemate Nazeef picked him off late on and continued his long winning run. Nazeef is a gutsy horse who . . .

  • As punters we can all be tempted to chase the dream win and there's nothing wrong with that. Providing, as always, that we only bet with sums we can afford to lose and we never chase our losses. Just two of the golden rules of betting on sport.

When it comes to football accumulators, longer serving members of VG Tips know that we have enjoyed some massive wins over the years. But they come along rarely, inevitably so. But double figure price accumulator wins pay for the other accas that might flop during any season. Look upon football accumulators . . .

AL SUHAIL won for members of VG Tips at Newmarket. My only NAP on the day, he was the confident selection of Thursday because of two factors. 1) The odds of on offer and 2) He was on all known form the best horse in the race.

Some days one horse stands out and for all I gave Lord Campari a good write up, I was astonished that one was favourite. Al Suhail should have been so but I am very grateful to the bookies who offered odds of 5/1 about Al Suhail the day . . .

Last weekend was memorable for various reasons. Starting with the surprising winner of the Derby at Epsom. Serpentine took up the lead early on and just kept on going. Coming around Tattenham Corner and going downhill, he became the horse the others could not catch. It is not taking anything away from the horse or his likeable jockey to say that most of the other jockeys in the race were missing in action. Quite what they were thinking of in allowing Serpentine to open up such a big lead only they know. Several of those not riding horses trained by . . .

  • Just when you think you have a handle on how certain football teams are doing, they spring surprises on you.

Last weekend, a Luton Town side fighting for their survival in the Championship, were at home against Reading. The home side, Luton, came into the game in confident form, being unbeaten since resumption, including a draw at top of the table Leeds.

Reading, meanwhile, had not won since resumption. They travelled to Luton and returned home with a 0-5 victory.

That defeat for Luton brought down my 6 teams to win accumulator. The other five teams won. But, as . . .

I am sending out analysis and selections for Sunday before either the Oaks or the Derby have taken place on Saturday. But SAFE VOYAGE, an 11/8 tip to members, won the first race I focused on at Epsom. A nice start to the day.

This is a very busy time of racing in the UK, Ireland and France. Top class meetings are coming along in the manner of buses, all close together.

Next week we can look forward to racing returning to the Knavesmire at York. A great racecourse run by professional people. As has been the . . .

During lockdown, when we were without the sports we love from late March until June 1st, I was chuffed with how members of VG Tips stuck with me. Flattered by the loyalty they displayed, continuing to pay for my service with the personal guarantee from me that I would extend their memberships by the number of days they had each missed out on.  As I have done so.

Their loyalty is admirable. Philip contacted me to say:- “Just a quick email to say thank you. Your analysis is great and thoroughly enjoy reading your emails. It is very clear you . . .

Some days of racing are great. We can look forward to top quality racing on Saturday and Sunday. I don't mind taking hours or days studying form for such races. It's worth the effort and it gets what Poirot would call the 'little grey cells' working hard.

But when I take ages to study races that are of a much lesser grade, it's not a good sign. I worry when that happens. It means I am wading through some low class racing, desperately trying to find us some potential winners or double figure priced each way selections . . .

  • Racing. Derby Preview and Tips

    By on 1st July 2020

16 horses are due to to go post for the Derby at 4.55pm on Saturday 4th of July. Gone are those glorious days when the race took place on the first Wednesday of the month. Being a traditionalist, I would still rather the Derby was midweek.

But here we are. The 4th of July is independence day in the USA and has been deliberately chosen as the day the pubs of England will open once more. Imagine how drunk some people will be by the time this race goes off. They will be in the boozers, placing bets via . . .
