It’s been a long football season of profitable punting culminating in my ante-post FA Cup final tip.
At the beginning of 2020, my selection to lift the trophy appeared a bold bet. Some wondered if I had lost my mind. As ever, it was the price that attracted me. That coupled with the belief that a new coach would improve the form of the club in question.
Arsenal to win the FA Cup was a 14/1 tip to members on January 3rd.
They progressed nicely to the final and beat Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta looked delighted to win a domestic trophy the value of which has been so undermined by the authorities who run the sport.
We sometimes despair at how foreign coaches don’t appreciate how important the FA Cup has been in England. It’s long history and its place in the football calendar. But former players like Arteta grew up watching the final, in his case from his home country of Spain.
The manner in which he ran on to the pitch to celebrate at the final whistle, along with the beaming smile on his face when he lifted the FA Cup, tells me he ‘gets it.’ After all, as a player at Arsenal, he won the FA Cup.
Unlike some other managers, Arteta believes the tournament matters and should be preserved. Not diminished.
Good for him. As for me, I’ve banked my winnings from a bet placed on January 1st, and collected on August 1st.
