  • Another packed Saturday is ahead of us. More and more, the best racing is staged at the weekend and it is the time when punters can bet too often. But what are we to do when the racing authorities schedule the best races over a couple of days, rather than spread them throughout the week?

Be selective, that's what. What do I mean by that? Well, if the racing in the early or middle part of the week (outside of the big festivals) is crap; then leave it alone. Wait for the best racing and the best bets, and . . .

  • You know the jumps season proper is here for real when the name Cheltenham appears in the fixture list. Prestbury Park has been the venue for some of the greatest highlights of National Hunt racing going back decades.

In March we will have the Cheltenham Festival to enjoy, both from a betting and spectator point of view. By then we will have a much better idea about which horses will be the stars of this jumps season. Right now, there are more questions than answers on that front.

The Open meeting at Cheltenham gives us some clues and is a . . .

  • So now we know. Only England fans will be travelling to Russia to cheer on their national side. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland missed out via the play offs. Fans of those countries will join Scottish and Welsh fans in staying at home next summer.

Anyone joining VG Tips for one year will be covered for my analysis and tips for the tournament in the summer of 2018. So if you are considering joining my lovely and loyal band of followers - and if you are into betting on football - then now is as good a time as any . . .

  • On Boxing Day one of my favourite races takes place at Kempton Park. I have long enjoyed the King George Festival and who can forget the one and only Kauto Star winning the feature race five times?

But Kempton Park is under threat of development. Some of my happiest punting days have been spent there but, it has to be said, the meetings staged there since all weather racing dominated the fixture list are not as good as they were when it was a turf only racecourse.

Earlier this week a desperate race meeting was staged there. The prize money . . .

  • There was a time, not so many years ago, when Sunday racing was an afterthought for trainers and racecourses. Going to the races on a Sunday might be something for a bored family to do on the day, but it was not for those who took the sport seriously.

That has changed in more recent years, especially in the jumps season. Sunday can often deliver good racing in the UK and Ireland.

At this very early stage of the season, you will see some top class horses having their first race of the campaign and it is the case that . . .

  • On a Promise won for us on Friday at early odds of 11/8. But it was rhe each way returns that pleased me the most.

Grand Morning drifted in the betting market and was placed third for fellow each way backers at odds of 14/1. Another one that delivered each way returns was It’s Got Legs, which was placed second first time out at SP odds of 10/1.

In the Bull was another that returned a little profit for us when placed at 11/2. And Kimberely Point, a 9/1 each way tip for the . . .

  • Terrible refereeing ensured Northern Ireland lost the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play off at home to Switzerland. The visitors won courtesy of a penalty that never was.

It’s going to be tough for the well managed Northern Ireland to reverse that scoreline this weekend. They are as big as 7/1 to win in Switzerland. But Switzerland are very good at home and I fear Northern Ireland will not be going to Russia next summer.

As for the Republic of Ireland and their two leg fixture against Denmark, this son of a Dubliner admits to finding . . .

  • A couple of short priced winners on Thursday, but you’ll never find me crowing about victories at those type of prices. I spend time trying to find some potential value in the betting market.

Some days that comes to you readily. On other days, I spend hours desperately trying to find something at a price. In days of old, not so many years ago, Friday was always a good day for that.  Not now.

Tonight, Thursday, has been one of those when I wish I had not begun studying the form. It’s only when you are part way . . .

  • Last Saturday was a profitable day of punting for members of VG Tips and there were a couple of winners on a Sunday when there were a few big price outsiders win races. Winners very few people will have backed.

Last weekend was a classic example of what a rollercoaster ride punting can be. You have to be able to stomach the ups and downs.

That is one aspect I talk about in a 10 part free video course I recorded today. Available to one and all, I will be editing and uploading those short, sharp, helpful videos to the . . .

  • Well, if one of your favourite horses cannot win for you, it’s best they are beaten by another close to your heart.

So it was that 10/1 each way tip Bristol de Mai won the Charlie Hall Chase after Cue Card fell, connections blaming the low sun for him getting one fence wrong.

Bristol de Mai has done very nicely for members of VG Tips in times past and won well today from another favourite, stablemate Blaklion.

The NAP of the day at Wetherby, La Bague Au Roi, won for us. As I am fond of telling exiting . . .
