  • While my own punting went wrong last Saturday, there were some horses that caught the eye wih a view to the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Waiting Patiently impressed me greatly and I will be interested to see which race that one turns up in come March.

Fountains Windfall also caught the eye when easily winning a Class 2 Chase at Kempton Park. The opposition the gelding faced on Saturday was not up to much, but you had to take note of the ease with which Fountains Windfall won.

Indeed, quite a few of the races at Kempton on Saturday offered . . .

  • Pride comes before a fall. That’s what my late mother would say when I was quick to brag about success on the field of sport. How right she was.

Four winners from five races on Friday is followed by only one winner, the first selection, on Saturday.

It is rare for the each way selections to fail to even get placed, but it happened today and I can only say ‘sorry.’ There were some surprisingly poor performances by certain horses and connections will have to look for explanations as to why their well fancied horses flopped on the day . . .

  • 5 races selected on Friday and four winners - all odds against for those who took the early prices.

They weren't the sort of prices that set my nightie on fire (so to speak), but a winner is a winner and I know that some members of VG Tips only want winners, regardless of price. They are not as keen as I am on finding something at a big price. I try to cater for all tastes and while I was personally not excited about the quality of racing on Friday, I am delighted to have delivered members four winners . . .

  • Since we last conversed about football, Phillipe Coutinho has got the move he wanted, Barcelona paying £142 million for the Liverpool midfielder who joins the best side in Spain on a five and a half year contract.

At Barcelona the powers that be can be voted in or out of office by the members, and those supporters get impatient if the bosses do not spend enough money on purchasing players. The club sold Neymar for a world record fee and fans wanted to know when and how some of that cash would be spent. Coutinho will be groomed to be . . .

  • There is an interesting article on the Racing Post website analysing how much jockeys earn. While even the most casual viewer of racing will have heard of the likes of Frankie Dettori, what the top few jockeys earn is a world away from what your average jockey makes from racing.

For so many of them, the fee for riding will be all they get from a day 'at the office.' Winning would be a bonus. Jockeys, especially the young ones, often share a car to racecourses.  That way they can significantly reduce the individual travel costs. Imagine if all jockeys . . .

  • Age is just a number.

Don't take my word for it. Speak to Raz de Maree or Alfie Spinner. They were the first two home in the Welsh Grand National and they are 13 years of age, a grand age for thoroughbred racehorses.

I do so wish that, having written so glowingly about Raz de Maree, I had made him the second each way selection in that race. I did tip runner up Alfie Spinner as my each way NAP and the 33/1 SP price about that one ensured that VG Tips members and I returned some tidy . . .

  • The weather has played havoc with racing this past week. Numerous meetings have been called off over the New Year period. The meeting at Wetherby on Friday was called off and there are even course inspections planned for next week.

One race that was lost to us late last year was the ultra competitive Welsh Grand National. I spent hours studying the form and writing up my appraisal of the race. The next day, the meeting at Chepstow was called off. There are not as many runners now that it is being staged tomorrow, but it is still a competitive . . .

  • We had another instance in midweek of why you should follow me on Twitter. @VGTIPS1 for football and @betonsportstips for racing.

At 7pm on Tuesday I was listening to the radio and heard the team news for the crucial game between West Ham and West Brom. The Hammers had Andy Carroll back in attack and West Brom manager Alan Pardew had dropped some experienced players.

I fancied Carroll would score for West Ham. I decided to place a12/1 treble on wins for West Ham, Crystal Palace and Spurs. I tweeted that bet via both Twitter feeds.

    At half time . . .

  • A jockey turned up for racing at Cheltenham under the influence of alcohol. He's not the first to do this and he'll not be the last. But how daft do you have to be to go out for drinks on New Year's Eve when you know a trainer who trusts you - and who has your career in his hands - has booked you some good rides at the most high profile jumps racecourse in the country?

Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies was very understanding of the actions of jockey Tom Bellamy, at least in public. Frankly, had he been . . .

  • A new year of racing begins with the annual meeting at Prestbury Park, Cheltenham. Always a good meeting and sometimes offering clues about horses being aimed at the festival in March.

It is true that racing can go into what one bookie called "a funk" between new year and March. As we progress towards the festival, you will notice trainers keeping their best horses wrapped in cotton wool and saved for the festival itself.

But there are still plenty of good race meetings to come before then and we must keep our eyes peeled for performances that will offer us . . .
