So how do you like to bet?

Are you, like me, someone who prefers to look for something at a big each way price and take a chance on that one winning (as per my 22/1 and 20/1 winners of both the English and Irish Derby?)

Or are you a win only punter?

I am both. I will always prefer taking money from the satchel of a bookie via one at a double figure price, on each way terms, regardless of whether that horse wins or simply finishes in the frame and returns me some tasty profit.

    Over . . .

A 7/2 winner is not to be sniffed at.

As suggested to members of VG Tips, the talented jockey Rachel Richardson ensured that my 7/2 tip last night, Gullane One, led from start to finish to win at Hamilton.

Desert Fire also won on the day but I told members I would not be touching the 1/7 favourite at Leicester as that sort of price is too short for my personal betting tastes. Compared to the ludicrous SP price of 1/16, Desert Fire was almost value at 1/7!

Why offer tips at such odds if . . .

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is to be sponsored by a company that produces cider. It used to be sponsored by a champagne. Is this a sign of the race appealing more to those who drink cheaper booze at Prestbury Park? Probably not.

I don't bother too much with who sponsors races. I loathe seeing traditional sponsors lose their gig, only for it to be handed over to one of the big online bookmakers.

I shall forever call the Gold Cup at Newbury the Hennessy Gold Cup. No amount of people telling me that Ladbrokes now sponsor the race will . . .

Alpha Centauri once again proved she is classy when easily winning the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on Friday. Her third consecutive Group 1 victory so far this season.

As members of VG Tips know, personally I am not one to bet odds on unless I believe the early price on offer does itself reflect value even when odds on. That was the case yesterday when I wrote to members about the Falmouth Stakes. At 8/15 Aplha Centauri was definitely a bet. She won at SP odds of only 4/9. I was on at the first price. I would . . .

  • England are out of the World Cup.

What began so well with England all over Croatia in the first half - and some members of VG Tips being on the 22/1 Kieran Trippier (the England player who has impressed me the most) anytime goalscorer bet I mentioned in passing - ended with England having weary legs, looking disorganised and capitulating to Croatia, losing the semi-final 2-1 in extra time.

At half time the Croatian manager told his players that this would be the last chance for most of them to reach a World Cup final. He told them England . . .

Every owner, every racehorse trainer has their day in the sun. I recall asking the multiple champion jump jockey if punters should follow the form of any one particular stable. If a particular trainer is firing home winner after winner, should us punters back that trainers horses blindly.

Tony McCoy said that while the form of a trainer is an important consideration for punters, the simple fact is that the form of a trainer can change for the worse at any time, and for reasons none of us can understand.

The same applies with owners. There was a time not . . .

Although there are meetings elsewhere on Thursday, the quality race meeting is at the home of flat racing, Newmarket.

If you can ever get to a race meeting there, do so. Almost as good is to go to the Newmarket gallops early one morning. That way you get to see some of the finest thoroughbred racehorses exercising for free. The Newmarket heath is public land so you can go there for a walk and enjoy seeing horses up close and personal. I haveenjoyed doing that in the past and plan to do so again in the future.

    The three day . . .

  • In my experience, World Cups tend to get better as the tournament progresses. This year in Russia has been no different. There has been plenty to talk about. VAR has divided opinion. England fans should welcome it, so far at least. The presence of VAR has reduced the overall amount of grappling of attackers at set pieces and England have done best at corners and free kicks.

This has been an exciting World Cup. The most eventful and included some truly great goals. But don't tell me the quality of the football played has been the purest. It hasn . . .

Why doesn't the Queen just get on with it?

It is time jockey Ryan Moore was officially Sir Ryan Moore. I wish I had kept a total of how many winners he has ridden to victory for me. How much profit he has so far delivered me over three decades.

He did it again on Friday. Well Done Fox was a 4/1 tip to members of VG Tips on Thursday night and the reasoning behind my thinking was explained clearly to them. Well Done Fox won the first race I selected for analysis on the day and the . . .
