  • There's more than one way to extract money from the briefcase of a bookmaker.

I was as happy with each way profit courtesy of fourth placed Quite by Chance at SP odds of 20/1 as I was with the 7/4 win with my very confident NAP bet on Jaleo at Lingfield.

Cliffs of Dover, 4/6 when selected, also won for us, but at a much shorter SP price, and each way selection Hawk High was placed at odds of 8/1.

The rain did arrive at Cheltenham and the Good/Good to Soft ground turned very . . .

  • The December meeting at Cheltenham has long been a favourite of mine. It looks less competitive on Friday than is usually the case and it includes the Cross Country race that was moved from earlier in the year because there had not been enough rainfall. There still hasn't been and a much smaller field contests that race on Friday (on ground being watered) than is usualy the case. Hence why I am not offering a selection in the marathon Cross Country race for the first time in many  years.

There is also a meeting up at Doncaster and it . . .

  • What a fabulous day of racing on Saturday. I'm not just talking about our winners at 7/1, 15/8 and 11/8. As de Mee  won the Grand Sefton Chase for Paul Nicholls and the early price of 7/1 was value and almost twice the SP price.

I am speaking of the exciting races on view, regardless of whether or not you had a bet in the race. Remember, racing is a sport to watch in the first instance. It should never be looked upon purely as another betting opportunity. The . . .

Frost got into the ground at Exeter on Friday morning and we're now entering the time of the year when meetings will be abandoned for all manner of weather related reasons.

Saturday should be OK. There are good meetings on both sides of the Irish sea. Sandown stages what looks to me to be a disappointing size of field for the Tingle Creek, Aintree offers us an ultra competitive looking big field Becher Chase and, over in Ireland, there is some good racing on both Saturday and Sunday.

Martello Tower is the first selection . . .

  • It's only last weekend that we enjoyed winners at odds of 12/1 (Empire of Dirt at Navan) and 10/1 (Native River tipped to win the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury when available at 11/1). Even at 6/1 the night before racing, Native River proved to be a value winner.

A week is a long time in racing. I call my service 'Something for the Weekend' because, more and more, the midweek fixtures are poor. Unless there are high grade feature meetings being staged, too many of the run of the mill midweek fixtures are bookie . . .

  • Don't you just hate it when your horse is leading but then falls at the final fence? That was the fate that befell our 7/2 fancy Southfield Theatre on Saturday. But the Paul Nicholls horse is reported to be none the worse for the tumble, and that's all that matters.

Long time members will recall the day that I was on two at good each way prices as they both approached the final fence well clear of the rest. I wanted the bigger price of the two to win, ideally, but didn't care too much as . . .

  • Well I hope those members who followed me in on 28/1 shot Seventh Heaven banked their winnings. I have.

That's the wise thing to do. Leave you profit sitting in an online account and you'll be tempted to use some of it for a bet you had no intention of placing. That's what the bookie wants you to do.

If you already planned a subsequent bet on something, fair enough. But, if like me you are a patient punter and wait for the right bet (and not just any bet), then you would be wise to . . .

  • It's been a soggy year for racing. By now we should be looking forward to a Coral Cup meeting at Sandown raced on Good or even Good to Firm ground.

But, as at Friday afternoon, the word 'soft' appears in the ground conditions at that racecourse. Clerk of the Course Andrew Cooper knows his work. If he says it is soft or good to soft, you can trust his word.

That is not the case at all racecourses. The ground conditions matter because some horses are very choosy about the conditions they like underfoot. It is a serious consideration . . .
