Sergei Prokofiev bounced back to winning ways for members on Friday. Widely available at odds of 5/1 when members were advised on Friday, the drop down in grade of race worked out for the Aidan O'Brien trained colt.

Some times trainers simply have to do that in order to ensure owners of a horse win a race again and I am always on the lookout for one dropping in class of race.

No joy for Aidan in the next race I looked at when his second time out Frosty was well beaten by a big price outsider. Speaking . . .

I have been amazed all week that some folk criticised the ride of James Doyle aboard Sea of Class, the runner up in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

To finish so close to our 5/4 or 11/10 winner, Enable, was a fine effort when you consider how poorly drawn she was. You may question the hold up tactics of the trainer (as Pricewise, Tom Segal, of the Racing Post has done). But the Haggas family did take advice from the best flat jockey of my lifetime, Lester Piggott. He is the father of Maureen Haggas, wife . . .

    Seconditus Saturday!

Don't you just hate it when you choose the wrong one of two? When you plump for an eventual runner up, rather than the winner.

Happily was a great each way price of 20/1 when tipped to members on Friday. Happily came close to winning. But Laurens proved her win over Alpha Centauri last time out was not a fluke. Wind Chimes was a very disappointing favourite. More prominent tactics might have resulted in Happily winning, but all credit to Laurens. If you took the 20/1 each way about Happily, you made nice profit as . . .

Two winners from three tips on Friday and those who took the early prices were in the money.

Blue Mist was 4/1 when tipped 24 hours ago. Ryan Moore rode that one to victory at the much shorter SP price of 9/4

Then Tabdeed won very nicely for members of VG Tips when finding a gap and weaving through the field to win easily under a nice ride by Jim Crowley. Odds of 9/2 were available yesterday. The past the post price was a mere 6/4.

Once again, the early bird punters returned the most profit . . .

I'm aware that some punters/tipsters love backing horses racing overseas. That might be on the all weather surface at Meydan or in competitive races in France. Why do I tend to avoid such racing fixtures?

Often because the races are largely made up of horses we do not see race in the UK. There are some very good trainers in France, for example, but they only send their very best to race at big meetings in England. You might have a race in France for which a good Irish or British trained horse is entered, but what are . . .

So how long do you take to study form for a busy day of racing on Saturday? A question I have often been asked over the years.

Well it is 6.30pm my time now and I began my analysis, write up and racing tips for tomorrow at 8am. It's been a long haul.

It used to be even longer many years ago when I was crazy enough to study every single race meeting, including all weather dross at the likes of Wolverhampton. I used to get to bed at 3am in those days. I must have been crazy . . .

Why, asks VG Tips member Oscar, is the flat racing in September and October such a muddling collection of hard to forecast races?

Those who have followed me for years, or even decades, have seen me write about that subject in the past.

The fact is that, come this time of the year, far too many flat races are made up of horses that are tired. They've been racing hard and often since April or May and, to be frank, they are knackered and in need of a winter of rest.

Or we see late season maiden races in . . .

The end of the flat turf season creeps ever closer and, soon, my November mind will be turning to the new National Hunt season. Bring it on!

I have been critical of the last couple of flat seasons but I have enjoyed this past one. From a betting perspective and purely from watching a new batch of promising two year olds show what they are worth. We have seen some very good racing on the flat these past summer months and a number of those horses will be winning for members of VG Tips once again next season.

    We have . . .

You never grow accustomed to being beaten by a short head. 16/1 each way tip Mayleaf Shine was beaten by that margin on Friday. But that's why I always advocate each way bets at such odds. Unlucky to just finish second at Ayr, at least we punters still made profit from the race.

Earlier in the day my 7/4 Newbury NAP, Dirty Rascal, justified my confidence when winning at SP odds of 11/10.

The best value winner was Exec Chef. Available at odds as big as 14/1 the night before racing - when members are advised . . .

Last weekend proved to be a mixed bag and, sadly, the last day that we shall see two very fine horses take to the track.

It was clear fairly early on that all was not well with the sensation of this past flat season, the Jessica Harrington trained Alpha Centauri. A clipped joint in her fetlock and the filly has, quite sensibly I believe, been retired. She won six of her ten starts earning over a million and a quarter pounds in prize money. She owes owners and bookies nothing. Her win at Ascot this past summer will live long . . .
