  • Cobra de Mai won for us at odds of 4/1 (SP) today. Another case of a horse performing very well immediately after having undergone a wind operation. I was especially pleased to see that Dan Skelton tip winning because he twice won for members of VG Tips last year.

Coo Star Sivola, a 2/1 tip, won by a monster distance of 17 lengths, a perfect case of a horse dropping big style in class and finding winning easy once again.

While I am always on the look out for a horse that is young and improving, and which . . .

  • What's in a price? Why wait to back a horse you fancy when most bookies offer Guaranteed Price odds?

That way, if the price about your selection improves between the time you place the bet and the horse coming past the post, you get paid out at the bigger price. That was the case today for myself and anyone else who backed my fancy at Hungtingdon, Rene's Girl.

The first price the night before racing was 5/2 but that drifted out to 4/1 SP, so ensuring nice and much needed returns on the day.

    And it . . .

  • It sounds daft, I know, but some horses simply like to follow one or two home in a race. If they get out in front, they idle. They switch off. They don’t want to be the first past the post. They would rather hang on the tail of another. Strange, but true.

Such horses can be frustrating for trainers, owners and punters. For the trainer it is a question of deciding whether to drop the horse down in class in order to get that all important first victory.

Punters have to decide whether to give up or give the . . .

  • Soon the betting market for the big races at the Cheltenham Festival next month will shake down and we'll have a clearer idea which horses will take each other on in what look like being some mouthwatering contests. I can hardly wait. But we must.

This weekend some horses well fancied to land big prizes at Prestbury Park next month have their last prep race prior to the festival. Win this weekend, and the prices for them winning a feature race a month from now will be slashed in the ante-post market. Lose when fancied to win this . . .

  • All eyes are looking ahead to some good racing on Saturday, when a few horses destined for the Cheltenham Festival a month from now have their final prep runs.

I have my own ideas about the winners at Sandown on Saturday, and the current best ante-post bets for the festival. The former will be with you on Friday. The latter, early next week.

As is often the case at this time of the year, the racing the rest of the week rhymes with the word white!

But, as they say, something has to win.

    Friday

  • In atrocious conditions on Saturday, we saw that Kalashnikov is everything the Novice promised to be when members of VG Tips won backing him early in his racing career at odds of 12/1. The 5 year old stepped up in class and company and saw off his olders and some experienced at that level - and saw them off with plenty to spare.

I now think Kalashnikov could shoot them up at the Cheltenham Festival. He has two entries there, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle on March 13th and the Ballymore on the 14th. I would expect him to race in . . .

  • I always feel sorry for the stable staff when they lose a horse to injury. Fountains Windfall died today, Friday, but not on a racecourse. He died in a schooling accident at the stables of trainer Anthony Honeyball.

I wrote glowingly about Fountains Windfall 24 hours ago and he was due to race at Warwick on Saturday, prior to a big race fixture at the Cheltenham Festival.

When a relatively small yard such as that run by Anthony Honeyball have a star in their midst, such a death is felt all the more. Nobody cares for or about thoroughbred racehorses . . .

  • With one or two notable exceptions, the Dubin Irish Racing Festival staged last weekend seems to have gone down well with those who relish quality National Hunt racing.

I thought it was a splendid meeting and a fantastic addition to the pre-Cheltenham racing schedule. It is true that some of the races may not have produced results that we should take literally as they relate to what might happen at the Cheltenham Festival, but other races did.

Going forward to the festival, Footpad impressed and may once again get the better of my darling Petit Moucher if, as expected . . .

  • Super Supasundae! Another 25/1 winner for members of VG Tips. How I love that price!
I was not alone in reacting fast on Friday when bookies had Supasundae at odds of 25/1 and 22/1. You see, sometimes the bookies price up the market wrong. Big style. It doesn't happen as often as it used to. But it can still happen.

Clearly punters steamed in as the past the post SP price was only 8/1. Yet again, it's the early bird bettor who does the best.

I took the big price, as did many members . . .

  • Sam's Gunner won for us on Friday and was available at 9/4 on Thursday night.

Sadly, Noel Fehily did not win the race named after him at Chepstow and my each way NAP Molly Carew could only finish seventh. Surprising. Disappointing. Sods law that the one I nap lets me down while the only other selection on the day goes and wins. Hopefully some members were on the winner.

The choice of NAPS is based on price as much as anything else. I NAP when I believe the price is bigger than it should be and that the . . .
