  • So there you have it. The King George VI is over with for another year and a new star is born. If, that is, a 9 year old can be classed as being born.

We won today on Thistlecrack at odds of 6/4. That turned out to be value. The horse has proved conclusively that he is a chaser with a bright future when winning the King George VI at Kempton on Boxing Day. Do not underestimate that victory. It is rare for a novice to win such a big race. He'd only raced over the larger obstacles . . .

  • Revenge is a dish best served cold, so it is often said.

And two winners at Newbury certainly exacted revenge upon opponents that had previously beaten them.

24 hours ago I was tempted to stay loyal to Clan des Obeaux but there was not statistical reason why that Paul Nicholls runner should reverse form with Protex Des Flos, which beat Clan des Obeaux at Cheltenham last January.

But, of course, there is no better trainer at improving a horse than Nicholls and Clan des Obeaux won easily. Too easily for the trainers liking.

  • It's day one of the two day Hennessy Gold Cup meeting at Newbury.

I am attending the meeting and looking forward to seeing in action some of the best national hunt horses around at the moment.

There will be a mixture of experienced thoroughbreds whose best days may be behind them, and some younger legs whose best days are to come.

This meeting is when the jumps trainers like Nicholls, Hobbs, Henderson, Fry, Tizzard and Skelton get serious about taking on each other via their best horses.

  • Some races truly are two horse events and the punter has to make a decision between two that are closely matched on form and ability, or who have met before. Some days you call the right one of the two. Other days you pick the wrong one.

I wrote yesterday of how I backed The Gurkha to beat Galileo Gold at Royal Ascot. The Gurkha was slow away that day and met trouble in running. Nevertheless, Galileo Gold won well and was stretching away at the finish.

After much debate with myself, I opted to be with Galileo Gold to . . .

  • I am writing this on Wednesday and before racing has begun at Royal Ascot on that day. So I cannot comment on results.

Thursday consists of some big field handicaps, ideal for ambitious each way backers, and some Group class races in which the markets are led by very obvious favourites.

There is something for all betting tastes at Royal Ascot on Thursday.

The Queen will present the Gold Cup to the winner of that Group 1 race that has been given a new name in honour of her 90th birthday.

The Queen has owned the winner of the Gold . . .
