  • Since we last conversed about football, Phillipe Coutinho has got the move he wanted, Barcelona paying £142 million for the Liverpool midfielder who joins the best side in Spain on a five and a half year contract.

At Barcelona the powers that be can be voted in or out of office by the members, and those supporters get impatient if the bosses do not spend enough money on purchasing players. The club sold Neymar for a world record fee and fans wanted to know when and how some of that cash would be spent. Coutinho will be groomed to be . . .

  • We had another instance in midweek of why you should follow me on Twitter. @VGTIPS1 for football and @betonsportstips for racing.

At 7pm on Tuesday I was listening to the radio and heard the team news for the crucial game between West Ham and West Brom. The Hammers had Andy Carroll back in attack and West Brom manager Alan Pardew had dropped some experienced players.

I fancied Carroll would score for West Ham. I decided to place a12/1 treble on wins for West Ham, Crystal Palace and Spurs. I tweeted that bet via both Twitter feeds.

    At half time . . .

  • Courtesy of Crystal Palace missing a 90th minute penalty, runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City remain unbeaten this season. That was a narrow escape for City. Their star player Kevin De Bruyne is being carried off the pitch as I write and he would be a big loss to City were that injury a serious one.

Palace have improved since the arrival of Roy Hodgson. So often that happens. A new manager comes in and results improve. Perish the thought that some players at some clubs deliberately perform poorly in order to get a manager a manager sacked.

    Most of . . .

  • You have to wonder who makes the big decisions at football clubs these days. So often it is not the manager. I cannot believe the likes of Bill Shankly would have put up with some of the shenanigans and ludicrous decisions made in the boardrooms of football clubs these days.

There are suits making important decisions who have not only not played the game, they talk a completely different language from anyone involved in football.

What an utter mess those who walked in to take over Swansea City have made of a club that was once seen as progressive and . . .

  • There is no rest for the wicked at Christmas. Nor is there for footballers.

We have reached that particularly busy period of the season where the games come thick and fast. Boxing Day can so often prove crucial for managers. Some may be in the last chance saloon.

Much more often than not the club bottom of the Premier League at Christmas, goes down. So Swansea will need a minor mircale to survive.

Newcastle got a crucial win on Saturday, as did under fire Stoke manager Mark Hughes. These days it is the scrap at the foot of the Premier . . .

  • The winning tips last weekend included:- Wolves win at 23/20, West Ham to win/Draw No Bet at 6/4, Both teams to score Man City v Spurs at 15/8, Everton win at 3/4, Bristol City win at 19/20, Cardiff City win at 3/4, Wigan win at 10/11 and Blackburn win at 4/5. While I will personally always prefer an odds against bet, those last five wins all proved to be value bets. It doesn't matter how you go about beating the bookie and making profit, just so long as you do . . .

  • Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho complained about the disrespectful manner in which Manchester City players and staff celebrated their win at Old Trafford. You have to laugh. Pot, kettle, black.

The first time I came across Jose was when his Porto side beat Manchester United in the Champions League. A victory he celebrated by running half the length of the pitch, along the touchline, and in front of his subsequent friend, the then United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. And I can recall the manner in which he celebrated crucial wins when manager of Real Madrid, including against his arch enemy . . .

  • The 5/1 winning bet for Everton getting a draw at Anfield was most welcome for me and those members of VG Tips who followed me in.

Liverpool may have one eye on their Champions League draw against Porto, which will not be easy. Jurgen Klopp needs to be careful that Liverpool don’t miss out on finishing the domestic season outside of the automatic qualification places come next May.

Chelsea have, as predicted, drawn Barcelona. I look forward to those two legs next February. I still think Barca are overpriced to win the competition.

So much attention is placed . . .

  • Napoli looks so beautiful in colour photographs. Dean Martin sung lovingly about the place. But I have removed Naples from my bucket list. I will not be spending a cent in the place. Leading 0-1 at pointless Feyenoord, the Napoli players jacked it in and contrived to lose to a team they had easily beaten once and which had previously been hopeless in the Champions League.

Yes, I expressed my concern about Napoli in my previous football tips post. Yes, I still put them in the accumulator. Yes, they were the only team of the six to let down . . .

  • The last group games for the Champions League are played on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Most of the usual suspects will go through to the knock out phase, although former finalists such as Atletico Madrid look like crashing out.

And then there are the Italian teams. Backing them to win in this competition can be dicey, especially away from home. For example, will Napoli put out a weakened team when they travel to play a fairly hopeless Feyenoord? Italian teams that only require a draw are the best in the world at getting a draw. It has been that way all . . .
