  • I love it when we get an odds on favourite beaten via a double figure priced selection.

Spain Burg won for us at odds of 16/1. The French raider was ridden by Frankie Dettori - his second winner for us at Newmarket on Friday after Journey won earlier in the day, with something to spare, at 6/4.

Frankie was impressed by Spain Burg which had a great turn of foot and easily beat Fair Eva - which let down odds on backers once again.

Spain Burg will be nothing like 16/1 the next time out, so I am glad . . .

  • At the time of writing, the last selection at Goodwood on Tuesday has yet to race, as do the Galway picks.

But, as things stand, all has gone well in Sussex. War Decree, tipped up at 15/8, won the Group 2 race at 2.35pm and was followed home by my double figure price each way selection, Thunder Snow (keep an eye out for that one next time out).

Thunder Snow was available at 16/1 and 14/1 on Monday night. That one went off, having been well backed, at only 8/1.

Members also enjoyed the winner . . .

  • I heard Tom Segal (Pricewise in the Racing Post) talking lots of sense earlier this week.

He was bemoaning how his favourite flat race, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is not what it was. And he's right. Like Tom, this feature race scheduled for Saturday has long been a favourite of mine. You were always sure of a top quality event and entrants that had raced in the Derby or other earlier feature races in the flat season.

Tom laid the blame for how the race as been diminished at the obsession with the Prix de . . .

  • I am writing this on Wednesday and before racing has begun at Royal Ascot on that day. So I cannot comment on results.

Thursday consists of some big field handicaps, ideal for ambitious each way backers, and some Group class races in which the markets are led by very obvious favourites.

There is something for all betting tastes at Royal Ascot on Thursday.

The Queen will present the Gold Cup to the winner of that Group 1 race that has been given a new name in honour of her 90th birthday.

The Queen has owned the winner of the Gold . . .

  • It's Royal Ascot next week and, for me at least, it cannot come soon enough.

I placed my first ante-post bet at odds of 7/4 two days ago and that price has now gone. But I will be e-mailing members as soon as possible with my ante-post Ascot fancies.

For all that meeting is very competitive and notoriously hard to call, there are a few I fancy ahead of time this year. Of course, I want to check the weather forecast first. A change in ground conditions can make a mockery of ante-post bets . . .

  • Golden Horn blows them away

    By on 5th October 2015

Few will disagree, this hasn’t been a golden flat season for racing in the UK. Too few star performances....
