I send my analysis and selections for Wednesday just as the second race has finished on Tuesday. Nice and early so that you have more time to study what I have to say. And please do read the analysis.

Calyx won the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, second ever time on a racecourse. So I think it safe to say this is one to go into your notebooks and a horse which will be winning a Group 1 race this season or next. Impressive.

Sergei Prokofiev was third in that race.

    Accidental Agent was a surprise 33/1 winner of the . . .

I know some people who actually bet on the colour of the hat that the Queen will wear on each day of Royal Ascot. But then I also know someone who used to bet on two flies crawling up a window or, one crazy day, which of the four of us could kick a football the furthest distance across the River Thames - without any thought of how the winner of the bet would recover the balls. I lost, thankfully.

I am selective with my selections, including at Ascot. It's tempting to bet on loads of horses but that way . . .

While our winner on Thursday, Sea of Class, was already known to be classy, trainer William Haggas admits he must now move her up in class of race to see just how good the filly is. She looks good and is one to keep in hour notebook or race tracker.

As is Pablo Escobarr. Members know how much I loathe losing a race by a whisker and the son of Galileo was beaten by a head at Haydock on Thursday night. He’ll be winning a race sooner rather than later so put that one in your notebook.

    While all . . .

It’s Royal Ascot next week. Hurrah!

I am not interested in all the fashion nonsense that receives so much television coverage. It is the horses I want to see and there are some top class thoroughbreds booked to take their place at Ascot from Tuesday.

I will be in touch with members of VG Tips in plenty of time for day 1 of racing at Ascot and also alert them to my other fancies later in the week.

I welcome all those who have signed up recently, including punters who have taken advantage of the half price annual membership . . .

Sometimes backing a horse in any race can come down to a choice between two, regardless of how many run. Those races for which the bookies have two priced up the same or similar; toss of a coin races, as I call them.

There’s a few of those on Saturday, especially at Haydock. When the choice is between two, you either call it right and seem like a genius or spend the rest of the day kicking yourself because the other one went and won. Decisions, decisions!

I’d like to welcome those who have joined VG Tips most . . .

I know that some punters refuse to believe me when I say that less can equal more, but it's true.

Last weekend, for the best quality racing on offer on Saturday, I targeted specific races, including the Derby. Existing members know that we won backing my NAP, Masar, at odds of 20/1. That was a joy to watch. My confidence in Masar being justified was more pleasing than the financial returns. The same applied to my 20/1 ante-post selection Roaring Lion (also tipped the night before racing, each way, when 9/1), which finished third.

    The . . .

Imagine putting £100.000 on a horse knowing you'll 'only' win £30.000. Such people have more money than brain cells. In that position, I swear I would give the money to a good cause.

Now imagine if that punter at Epsom on Friday gave a care when the horse that carried his money, Cracksman, looked in great danger of loosing a race he was 3/10 on to win. Would that punter be shaking in his or her boots? Perhaps not. Would they have missed the £100.000? Unlikely. Madness.

Lucky for him or her, Frankie Dettori grabbed . . .

I still miss the days when the Derby took place on a Wednesday in June. A day when the late Queen Mother would turn up, when the sun shone down on the Epsom Downs and my teacher, unbeknown to the headmistress, would turn the telly on and let the class watch the race.

No Queen Mum this year, obviously. No sunshine, sadly. Indeed the rain arrived earlier this week and some further showers are forecast between now and the off of the big race on Saturday.

It does mean the going at Epsom will be soft for the pre-cursor . . .

Battaash was the banker bet of the day and duly delivered. Some punters took advantage of the surprising pre-race drift and were on at 5/4. Battash won at SP odds of 10/11. Still value providing you don't mind backing horses at odds on prices.

The Feathered Nest returned a little each way profit at Chester but otherwise it was a disappointing Saturday of punting for me. As an each way punter you are always taking a bigger chance than a punter who sticks with the favourite in each race. On Saturday, quite a few favourites won . . .

I was pleased to see Arthur Kitt win for members, first time on a racecourse. Sometimes it is all about pedigree. A son of Camelot and half brother to a former winner for us, Eartha Kitt, Haydock expert Rickard Kingscote rode the colt to a comfortable victory at SP odds of 3/1.

But I was on at 6/1, the price on offer when I mailed members of VG Tips that tip on Thursday afternoon.

Arthur Kitt is one to keep an eye out for in the future.

George Bowen was beaten by a neck. I'd rather lose . . .
