    It's time.

    Time to see if I can select the winner of the Grand National at Aintree for the third successive year. I'll pass out should I do so.

    What do we know about this race?

    It's not as tough to win as it was 51 years ago when Foinavon took advantage of a pile up and won at 100/1. The fences are safer and therefore not as demanding as they were even ten years ago. But that is fine by me. My first choice for the National is the same every year - please let all . . .

    Aintree - Saturday April 14th

    5.15 - Grand National Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (Class 1) over 4 miles, 2 furlongs and 74 yards

    At the time of writing, almost twice the number of actual runners come the day are declared to race. So this can only be a post about those most likely to actually be at post on the day, including those I have had an eye on for some time.

    How on earth I managed to make the winning One For Arthur my 40/1 each way tip . . .

  • Cheltenham Festival 2018 Preview Part 1

    Not long now. Until the roar goes up at Prestbury Park and the 2018 Cheltenham Festival begins.

    Let me begin with the obvious - but important.

    As of now, March 3rd, we cannot know what the turf conditions will be at Prestbury Park on March 13th.

    If all this snow and ice melts on course, you could reasonably expect the going to be soft on day one. Or, at best, Good to Soft. The more usual than not "Good" ground looks unlikely. But the Met Office are suggesting the UK will warm up in time for the festival, so we must . . .

  • Another football season begins and I take out from the cupboard my crystal ball. Shaped like a football, it is not sponsored by some corporate company. It's just a plain, old fashioned crystal ball I use each August in the hope that, come the following May, I appear to have all the skills of someone who can look into the future and predict some ups and downs in four divisions.

    Last season went well. When I look back at the predictions offered to existing members twelve months ago, forgive me for patting myself on the back. Many punters do . . .
