It sounds daft, I know, but some horses simply like to follow one or two home in a race. If they get out in front, they idle. They switch off. They don’t want to be the first past the post. They would rather hang on the tail of another. Strange, but true.
Such horses can be frustrating for trainers, owners and punters. For the trainer it is a question of deciding whether to drop the horse down in class in order to get that all important first victory.
