Does it matter what a race is called? Does it matter if so many races nowadays are sponsored by bookies? It does to me.
Call me a traditionalist (and I'd be flattered), but the loss of names such as the Hennessy Gold Cup makes the sport poorer. At least for me. I know that so many races would struggle to find a sponsor were it not for bookies stepping in to add their name to a race, but I come from an era when the likes of Mackeson sponsored a feature race, the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.
