  • So the rain has come for Royal Ascot and trainers are withdrawing those horses that prefer fast, rattling ground. That's a pity.

    Some big names have been pulled out, or moved to races later in the week. But there is rain forecast for much of the week, so soft or good to soft going is likely to be around for most of the five day festival of top class flat racing.

    Day 1 of Royal Ascot looks a cracker. 

    Tuesday

    2.30 - the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes

  • The going conditions at York on Saturday could be crucial. At the time of writing on Friday afternoon the course has had 9mms of rain and, according to the Assistant Clerk of the Course, the going is Good.

    The Met Office says that scattered showers are expected tonight and on Saturday and that some showery outbreaks could be "locally heavy." That sounds like a get out clause for weathermen!

    It is important because there are horses set to compete at York who would relish soft conditions underfoot. Whether that is the case or not will depend on how much rainfall . . .

  • It's Royal Ascot next week and, for me at least, it cannot come soon enough.

    I placed my first ante-post bet at odds of 7/4 two days ago and that price has now gone. But I will be e-mailing members as soon as possible with my ante-post Ascot fancies.

    For all that meeting is very competitive and notoriously hard to call, there are a few I fancy ahead of time this year. Of course, I want to check the weather forecast first. A change in ground conditions can make a mockery of ante-post bets . . .

  • Why is pedigree so important? That's what I am often asked. Why do I constantly mention how well bred certain horses are?

    It's because pedigree is vital when assessing how well a young horse may do. It is by no means guaranteed that a colt or filly will prove to be every bit as good as one or both of his or her parents. After all, my mum had four boys and only one turned out to be Group class!

    But the great Frankel (some say the greatest) has left his mark on racing. Already this flat season . . .
