  • At the time of writing, the last selection at Goodwood on Tuesday has yet to race, as do the Galway picks.

But, as things stand, all has gone well in Sussex. War Decree, tipped up at 15/8, won the Group 2 race at 2.35pm and was followed home by my double figure price each way selection, Thunder Snow (keep an eye out for that one next time out).

Thunder Snow was available at 16/1 and 14/1 on Monday night. That one went off, having been well backed, at only 8/1.

Members also enjoyed the winner . . .

  • Whichever side of the Irish Sea you find yourself this week, there's top quality racing on offer.

If in Ireland, do get to the Galway Festival for at least one day. The Irish love their racing and are very knowledgeable. They tend to go racing for the racing, not the beer. Well, apart from the gorgeous Guinness.

At so called glorious Goodwood, the scenery is stunning and the horses taking part are beautiful beasts.

My form at Goodwood fluctuates. Some years good, other years terrible. With little middle ground it seems.

    I recalled last year at Galway being a . . .

  • At the time of writing, Sea of Heaven, my first Friday selection, has won. 11/4 and 5/2 was available. Nice start to the day.

Saturday is, as usual these days, packed full of race meetings. It's like getting all your favourite chocolates on the same day. I do wish the authorities would hand out all the nicest ones more evenly across the week.

I am sometimes asked if you can bet too often on one day. The answer is a big YES!

I've been guilty of doing that on super Saturday's in years past. It . . .

  • I heard Tom Segal (Pricewise in the Racing Post) talking lots of sense earlier this week.

He was bemoaning how his favourite flat race, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is not what it was. And he's right. Like Tom, this feature race scheduled for Saturday has long been a favourite of mine. You were always sure of a top quality event and entrants that had raced in the Derby or other earlier feature races in the flat season.

Tom laid the blame for how the race as been diminished at the obsession with the Prix de . . .

  • Well I hope those members who followed me in on 28/1 shot Seventh Heaven banked their winnings. I have.

That's the wise thing to do. Leave you profit sitting in an online account and you'll be tempted to use some of it for a bet you had no intention of placing. That's what the bookie wants you to do.

If you already planned a subsequent bet on something, fair enough. But, if like me you are a patient punter and wait for the right bet (and not just any bet), then you would be wise to . . .

  • The flat season is coming to a peak. The weekend after this one we have top class racing at Ascot, including an all time favourite of mine, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. That meeting also includes the Juddmonte and International Stakes.

That is quickly followed by some very good racing at Goodwood over the final days of July. I look forward to those meetings.

At the time of writing none of the Friday evening racing selections have raced. So I must go straight on to Saturday and flat meetings at Newmarket, Newbury and the feature race across . . .

  • I write this before the selections for Thursday evening have raced.

I was asked the other day what a punter should do if having a bad run of results.

    1. Walk away for a while. Clear your head. Leave punting alone for a week or a month.
    2. Don't panic.
    3. Do not despair
    4. Go back to basics

By that I mean take a look at what worked for you when everything was going well. That may be over a period of many years, as it has been for me. Or it . . .

  • Unlike some punters, I have time and respect for the dour Scotsman Mark Johnston. A trainer based in North Yorkshire, he is not afraid to speak his mind.

It seems he has stirred a hornets nest by suggesting that betting should not be a part of the racing coverage in 2017 when ITV take over the contract to broadcast racing on terrestrial television.

The reaction has been damning. Bookies and punters seem united in telling Mark Johnston that, but for the betting industry, racing in the UK would be on its knees.

The fact is that many people only watch . . .
