  • I'd first like to welcome aboard, or welcome back, Michael, James, Jonathan and Roger. Perhaps they subscribed to my latest newsletter, released on Wednesday and available free to one and all. It is good to have you along.

Those who are returning lapsed members will likely recall how I work. Newbies will no doubt pick things up as we go along in our mission to beat the bookie over a period of many months. Something I have been doing, year on year, since 1998.

Some days there are days of racing offering several potential value bets, win and . . .

  • The flat season nears its end. It's been a good one for members of VG Tips but I am looking forward to the jumps season proper beginning in a few weeks.

Before that we have the St. Leger at Doncaster on Saturday and, at the start of October, the Prix De l'Arc de Triomphe in France.

For the St. Leger quite a gamble is taking place on Defoe. Twice a winner on soft ground (including for VG Tips members), Defoe should enjoy the soft conditions underfoot at Doncaster.

Heavy rain is forecast for there on Wednesday, and showers . . .

  • Two winners from three selections on Friday. Just for a moment there, I thought Ryan Moore was going to deliver the hat trick. But if you took the early prices about Speak in Colours (3/1) and Herculean (15/8) you were well ahead of the SP odds. Sadly, Alqamar was beaten half a length into second. But if you played the Ryan Moore connected each way treble, you are also in profit tonight.

Friday was easy in comparison to Saturday and Sunday. So much of the best racing is now reserved for the weekend and the next 48 hours . . .

  • Last weekend was another cracker for members of VG Tips. A third consecutive Saturday of winners at good prices.

Thank you to those who got in touch with nice messages and congratulatory comments. It's always reassuring to know I am not just doing this for myself.

Mutakatif got members off to a winning start at Chester while, down at Sandown, Masar impressed many when winning for us at 2/1.

Take Cover, a 5/1 tip from me the day before racing, did the business in the 5 furlong Beverley Bullet race. Here is what I told members about . . .

  • What qualities does one need to be a long term profitable punter, asks one new member.

Patience is certainly one. In my forthcoming new series of video diaries I talk about the most common mistakes punters make. It's not backing a loser. Any of us can do that from time to time. It's betting too often that sees punters lose heart.

They have money in their online account, staring out at them, and they get twitchy fingers. They look for a race in which they can bet. Or they try to find any sporting fixture to attract their . . .

  • I'd like to welcome new members aboard. Three of them have taken advantage of the cut price annual offer that closes at midnight tonight, August 31st.

Over the next 12 months they will learn, if they don't already know, that a year of punting is akin to being aboard a cruise liner for a long stretch. At different times the ride can get rocky. They'll be days when the entertainment on offer on board is poor. They'll be the odd day when you want to throw yourself overboard. But, in the main, the journey will be . . .

  • Well that was another winning Saturday. And then some!

7 days ago we were enjoying a 25/1 winner at VG Tips. Today, August 26th 2017, the winners came in at 16/1, 10/1 and 5/2. Three winners from the 5 races chosen.

I did express to members that I had a good feeling about today, and I was proved right.

Especially pleasing were the double figure priced wins by Nakeeta and Johnny Barnes. It is the case that I do best with bigger priced selections in handicaps. It has long been that way.

    Tomorrow probably does not . . .

  • Which of us as punters has not celebrated a win that wasn't? Which of us thought the horse we had backed had come out on top at the line and would be proven to be the winner of a photo finish? Only to be gutted to see the photo prove otherwise.

I was amazed Frankie Dettori punched the air when he thought he and Lady Aurelia had won the feature race on Friday. People at the track thought the same.

But watching on TV I thought Marsha had caught Lady Aurelia on the line. I thought Marsha had her . . .

  • Tangled, a 14/1 each way tip from me, won the first race of the day at York for members of VG Tips. And, of course, for that canny trainer, Richard Hannon. That's the second year running he has trained the winner of that particular race.

Don't always believe jockey bookings. While Ryan Moore was booked to ride the more high profile Hannon horse, De Bruyne Horse, Hannon often uses the very able Sean Levey as a jockey and my eyes were drawn to Tangled not purely because of the subsequent form of a horse he beat in . . .

  • The English weather has been the chief enemy of punters during this so called British summer.

The heavens opened at York late on Wednesday morning and, within the blink of an eye, the official ground conditions altered from Good to Firm, Good in Places right through to Good to Soft, Soft in places. It was one of the fastest changes I have ever witnessed.

I knew rain was expected at York on Wednesday and I told members of VG Tips that the Met Office had forecast rainfall. But I don't think anyone expected the deluge of rain that fell . . .
