On Sunday our Laurina once again proved she is a bit special, winning with plenty left in the tank once again. It's good when you spot one early in their career and they go on to justify your confidence. If Laurina is not winning a big race at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival, I will be surprised.

I enjoyed that race because the 1-2-3 tricast I suggested in my write up duly delivered. Laurina was followed home by Lackaneen Leader and Alletrix, in that order. A 1 Euro stake tricast at Fairyhouse would have returned you 22. I . . .

Monday is Irish Grand National Day.

Regardless of which country a Grand National is staged, one central ingredient is required from the horses. Stamina.

Have they got what it takes to race and stay over a monster trip of 3 miles and 5 furlongs on ground that is likely to be on the heavy side of soft? This race will test the stamina of the thirty contenders, many will not last the distance.

While there has been the odd year when several have fallen, that is not usually the case for this race. But it is very much the case . . .

The weather has certainly played havoc with racing this winter. It happens every year, of course. But several race meetings have been lost to snow, frost or rain already this winter and it looks as though the rain is on its way back for Sunday and Monday. Expect further meetings to be called off in the coming days.

For the smaller racecourses, this can be very bad news for their financial well being. Some racecourses do not stage that many meetings per year, so when one or more are abandoned to the weather, the very survival of that racecourse is . . .

I am always astonished and dismayed when I see some people on social media complaining that they have lost a bet because a horse has died in action or the jockey has, in their inexperienced eyes, not given their horse every chance of winning.

I have never been a jockey. Chances are, neither have you. This week we learned the sad news that admirable jockey Pat Smullen has had to stand down from riding due to being diagnosed with a tumour.

When you see news like that, it really doesn't matter that much if we as punters back a . . .

Hello there good people of VG Tips land.

I have studied the cards for Thursday's racing at Wetherby and Towcester and can find nothing to entice this punter at a nice price. It's pretty awful racing on offer.

The most likely winners will be priced odds on and, as the first selection on Wednesday proved once again, backing too many odds on shots is the express route to the poor house. It answers those who ask why I refrain, more often than not, from backing horses at odds on prices. Quite frankly, too many of them do not . . .

While some are getting excited about all weather flat racing on Good Friday, my attention is looking further ahead to jumps racing at Punchestown, Aintree and Ayr in April. Quality jumps racing.

I'll get excited about the flat season when there is truly something to get excited about. That is, in my opinion at least, not the so called all weather championships at Lingfield on Friday. You're welcome to it. Or, as Steve McQueen said to Robert Vaughan in the film Bullitt: "You work your side of the street, I'll work mine."

The National Hunt racing at . . .

Pride comes before a fall, so my mother often said. She'd have been saying that to me today were she still around.

One week you can do no wrong. The next, you're what my Irish father would have called an eejit.

That's the life of a punter. You're only as good as the last day, not the last week or month. At least that's how others sometimes judge you. In which case, today, I was something that rhymes with white. Only Pacific de Baune won for us and you'd have had to take the . . .

2 winners from 3 selections on Friday and the prices about both winners improved on the day. So, providing you used one of the many bookies offering Best Odds Guaranteed terms, you will have been paid out on CARTWRIGHT at 5/1 (and not the 3/1 on offer yesterday) and at 11/8 for GREAT FIELD (and not the 4/5 available last night).

I love it when they win and I enjoy it all the more when the odds improve on the day.

Oh no! Flat racing is back. So soon.

Some people have joined VG Tips since the success of the Cheltenham Festival while others reading this may be thinking of doing so.

I have written a summary of the winners and profitable punts members enjoyed at the festival last week. Click here to read.

I was happy to receive several messages from members who did well at the festival and who were kind enough to take a little time out and pass . . .

The party's over for another year and what a way to end such a superb Cheltenham Festival.

Some said the rainfall and consequent heavy ground would spoil the meeting. It didn't for me. Indeed, I would prefer it were the festival to take place on testing ground every year. It sorts out the weak from the strong. I like horses that can win in mud.

Native River did that. The further rainfall was just what my winner of the 2016 Hennessy Gold Cup wanted and he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup having led the race from the beginning . . .
