We all have our favourite racecourses. When it comes to flat racing, York is mine. The Knavesmire is a beautiful setting at any time of the year, whether racing is on or not.

Many moons ago I used to walk a dog I owned across the Knavesmire. You are allowed to and many people do. But not on race day.

For many years it was the location for hangings (before my time). Later on it was the location for the York golf course. It is prone to flood during periods of heavy rain but if the Met Office is correct . . .

There were some people who reckoned the much talked about low draw bias at Chester was a bit of a myth. I doubt they are saying that too loudly after the May meeting this past week.

By far the majority of the winners on The Roodee this past three days came out of single figure stall numbers. That's worth remembering when you next have a bet at Chester.

Another great looking racecourse awash with history is the Knavesmire at York. I miss the years of walking my dog on the Knavesmire on non racing days, obviously, and always enjoy . . .

Sir Ryan Moore (I knighted him long ago as the Queen is taking far too long over it) had a good day at Chester.

He won aboard my 5/4 tip Idaho but it was arguably his other winner, Rostropovich, that was more impressive when beating my fancy My Lord and Master into second. Ryan spoke highly of Rostropovich after the race and his words told me that, so far at least, this would be his second choice to ride in the Derby at Epsom early next month. Second behind the Evens favourite and stablemate, Saxon Warrior.

    Bookmakers reacted by . . .

As with people, some horses like the heat of battle and others do not.

I am now growing very concerned that the Aidan O'Brien trained Hunting Horn doesn't like a fight. That's only two races now but in both Hunting Horn has been racing fine until things get serious in the closing stages. He doesn't like being bumped. He was unlucky to some extent in both races, but was not going to win today at Chester. Disappointing. I fear O'Brien may pull Hunting Horn out of the Derby and my ambitious 66/1 ante-post . . .

The Roodee racecourse is a rather remarkable place. There are plans to redevelop the main stand. I like it as it is. Old fashioned. Rustic. Good looking.

The racecourse at Chester is pretty unique in this day and age. I like the place although I understand why some members of VG Tips, those who live in Chester, hate this week. All sorts of drunken hooray Henry's and Henrietta's make their way to Chester. Dressed in all their best clothing until, that is, alcohol and possibly bodily fluids ensure a dry cleaning bill is not too far away.

    I . . .

Welcome to new members Vishall and Matthew and welcome back to David and Roger.

The sun shone down on Newmarket at the weekend and the racecourse looked to be in excellent condition.

I'm not convinced, however, that we can take too much out of the big races. Certainly not the 1000 Guineas on Sunday, won by 66/1 outsider, Billesdon Brook (a one time race winner for members of VG Tips).

Those favoured in the betting market were well beaten, including the favourite Happily and the likes of stablemate I Can Fly and Soliloquy. Frankly, I would take the . . .

The turf flat season proper begins here and now. At Newmarket on Saturday with the 2000 Guineas, followed by the 1000 Guineas on Sunday.

I am sorry I could not take up the kind offer from member John to join him and friends at their booked table for the meeting. Newmarket may well be bathed in bank holiday sunshine and there are few better places to be on a nice day than the home of flat racing. Superb track and some fine horses on display on both Saturday and Sunday.

It's early season so anything could happen. Some not . . .

They will include the best meeting of the day, the 2000 Guineas meet at Newmarket.

After that, there will be selections on Saturday for Sunday, including one of my favourite races of the flat season, the 1000 Guineas.

The next football tips will be available on Thursday for weekend fixtures.

The fourth winner for me at Punchestown this week was Kemboy, a 7/1 tip 24 hours ago. Very well backed on the day, Kemboy won comfortably at an SP price of only 11/4. I love it when we grab an early value price.

As was the case on Thursday when 10/1 tip Park Paddocks also won for members of VG Tips.

Crystal Ocean, a 5/4 tip to win at Sandown on Friday, got the better of a photo finish courtesy of jockey Ryan Moore. The SP price was only Evens.

Moore rode one of my Derby . . .
