  • Two trainers I respect and who are as honest as the day is long, continued their good run of form on Thursday.

Willie Haggas has his string in great form right now and he had two winners at Doncaster. As did the ever likeable Ralph Beckett.

Before the race that saw his St Leger winner of last year return to Doncaster, the venue of her greatest victory, Beckett said that Simple Verse had produced her best piece of work for months only last . . .

  • After the glory of last Saturday (5 odds against winners from six races analysed) we now build up towards the culmination of the flat season.

Not just in the UK but also in Ireland and, next month, with the big race in France, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

This coming weekend we can look forward to the last big feature race of the flat season in England, the St Leger at Doncaster. And we also have some top class racing in France this coming weekend.

Across the Irish sea we have what looks like being a very hot . . .

  • 5 winners from 6 races in which I offered selections on Saturday and, for those wise enough to follow me on Twitter @betonsportstips - an each way double returned handsome profit.

The first four tips all won. Frontispiece 7/1, Dutch Law 14/1 when advised (12/1 SP), Hathal 7/1, The Last Lion 7/4 and Quiet Reflection won the feature race of the day, the Sprint Cup at Haydock. 11/2 when selected for members, that was prior to the favourite Limato being withdrawn due to the conditions (as forecasted here). So the SP about Quiet Reflection was . . .

  • Friday proved to be a bad day at the office for me. It happens. You have to be able to take the downs if you are to enjoy the ups when you are a punter.

As far as training goes, it's baffling why some stables have a run of great form. Willie Haggas is a trainer to follow at the moment. Winners again on Friday, including the 16/1 newcomer called Cristal Fizz, Haggas is having a great time of things right now.

Why do certain yards hit form at a certain time? Do the horses talk to each . . .

  • With the flat season nearing its close, I can say it has been better one than the previous one, but I still think flat racing ain't what it used to be.

We can't have a Frankel come along every year, of course not. But there seems to be a distinct lack of stars around right now. That will change once the crop of Frankel children mature. Some will appear in the same Group 1 races that their daddy excelled in. It's likely one or two of them will go on to be stars.

    But, on the whole . . .

  • I read today (Friday) of a new online bookie promising that they will not close the accounts of punters who win too often. If they stick to their word, and if they offer decent odds, they should attract plenty of business.

I am often asked what punters should do if a bookie refuses to take their bets online, or reduces the stakes they can place to small sums.

Take your business elsewhere. Over the years I have been blocked by some bookies simply for taking more from them than they take from me. Bad losers, they are.

    I still cannot . . .

  • As a punter you see the names of Goodwood and Newmarket and your heart soars. Then you look at the quality of the racing on offer tomorrow, Friday, and your heart sinks.

A week ago I was watching top quality flat racing at one of the best racecourses in the world. But, seven days on, all I can see ahead is Class 4, 5 and 6 racing with the odd Class 3 handicap thrown in. Time was that racing on a Friday was always good quality. What happened?

As a punter you can only deal with the deck handed to . . .

  • Ante-Post betting is not for the faint hearted. Most of you will know that you not only risk seeing your horse beaten, you risk it not turning up at all - and still losing your stake. It is the ultimate gamble.

Ante-post rules mean that you take the price on offer now, but will not be refunded if your horse is not in the final declarations for the race. A trainer or owner may withdraw the horse for any one of several reasons. The horse might be ill, lame, booked to race elsewhere or connections decide their runner will . . .

After an exhausting, but ultimately enjoyable and profitable few days at the York Ebor meeting, the racing this week...

  • I spent a very wet but profitable Friday at York. It's always good to begin the day with a winner and, as with Stormy Clouds on Thursday, my opening fancy on Friday duly delivered. I was pleasantly surprised that the 11/2 and 5/1 available online the night before was also available on course come the day. I duly took advantage.

What lesson are we reminded of by Stormy Clouds and Barsanti? If they are dropping back down in grade of race, having performed with credit at a higher level, sit up and take notice.

    Nemoralia was another . . .
