  • Trying to find an odds against bet worth chancing in the Premier League this weekend is no easy task. The obvious winners are priced at short odds on prices, obviously.

Everton, fresh from their 4-0 victory over Manchester City, may win at struggling Crystal Palace at odds of 7/5. But I'd want proof that Everton are going to being consistent before backing them to win away from home.

It is refreshing, however, that Ronald Koeman is beginning to give some of the young talent at Everton a chance to show what they could do. I was impressed . . .

  • This week the game of football lost one of the true gentlemen of the sport.

I first knew Graham Taylor when he was manager of Lincoln City. Our paths crossed again when he managed Watford and Aston Villa. Without Graham players such as John Barnes may never have become star names.

Graham was as honest a football manager as I ever had the pleasure of dealing with. The manner in which he was treated by the tabloid sports press when he was manager of England was a disgrace. It hurt him and his family, including his mother, who spent two . . .

  • So Chelsea can be beaten. Tottenham did just that.

Although I have pre-season and autumn placed bets on Chelsea to win the Premier League (at odds ranging from 6/1 up to 22/1), I am happy if the title race is more open. There is a long way to go until May and if more teams lay down a serious challenge, including Spurs, then that's good news for all neutrals.

I support a club in the Championship and believe the Premier League to be the most overhyped sporting product of my lifetime. But it does not matter . . .

  • Liverpool celebrated the victory against Manchester City as though they had won the league. It was a crucial victory. It keeps them in reaching distance of Chelsea, who set a record by winning their 13th consecutive Premier League game.

And, of course, it makes it unlikely that Man City will be winning the Premier League come May. If the manager is able to sign the players he wants to next summer, City will be a force next season. But not this.

Liverpool look the best bet to catch Chelsea but the Blues will have to lose their solid central defence . . .

  • Managers come and go. It was ever thus. But they come and go at an ever faster rate these days.

New, often nutty owners take charge at a club and, regardless of how the incumbent coach or manager is doing, they sack him and hire their own man. It works less often than it blows up in their faces.

Gary Monk was having a bad time of things at Swansea when the new American owners showed him the door. Has the situation improved since? No. Did their left of field appointment of an American coach work? No. The previous owner . . .

  • Injury time can work for punters and against them. A late, late goal by Brighton last weekend ensured that my 16/1 accumulator offered to members paid out. All four teams won. Hurrah!

I had personally played another 5 teams to win acca and went into the Merseyside derby requiring the draw I had tipped to you as a single bet. At 90 minutes the game was 0-0 and I was almost counting another three figure sum in winnings.

Only when the third official held up the board noting that there would be 8 minutes of injury time did . . .

  • In midweek we enjoyed an anytime goalscorer winning bet at odds of 17/11 via backing the man who seemingly cannot stop scoring for Liverpool, Divock Origi. The goal against Middlesbrough means he has scored in the last five Liverpool matches.

West Brom beat Swansea for us at best price of 21/20. Brighton won for us yet again, this time at 21/20. Derby County won at odds of 5/4 and Newcastle triumphed at 8/11.

I really should have put those three championship sides in a win treble. They are firing on all cylinders right now.

    As . . .

  • The winning football tips last weekend were as follows:- Reading at 39/20, Southend at 5/4 and Aston Villa at odds of 4/5.

The Premier League continues to defy logic. While I am happy that my early season tip for Chelsea to win the Premier League (offered at odds of 6/1 at a time when they were losing and leaking goals) is looking good after their 9th successive win, other teams are playing hard to predict.

Pep Guardiola is trying to get some unintelligent footballers to play intelligent football at Manchester City - and failing. That will take . . .

  • Chelsea march on seemingly unstoppable right now. If the manager is able to keep the same defensive line up for the majority of the season, and if Diego Costa avoids suspensions, the Blues look set to lead the way at the top of the Premier League into the new year.

Discipline was not in evidence last weekend when two Manchester City players chose to get themselves sent off in injury time as the team lost to Chelsea. Pep Guardiola needs to have words with Sergio Aguero. City can ill afford to have him facing . . .

  • There was one man more annoyed at Newcastle losing at Blackburn than Magpies manager Rafa Benitez. That man was me. And you! Those of you who joined me in backing my magnificent accumulator last weekend.

Six clubs did the business and won for us. Thank you Millwall, Derby, Brighton, Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester City. The irony of Newcastle losing at Blackburn was not lost on me. That was only the fourth time Newcastle have lost this season. And so it was that the 37/1 accumulator fell down courtesy of one of the teams you'd have bet your shirt . . .
