  • I went out of the house when Manchester City led Manchester United 2-0 at half time. It should have been 5-0 at that stage.

I returned home to discover United had fought back to win 2-3 in part thanks to Paul Pogba remembering he was a gifted footballer and could have an impact on a football match. Which begs the question, why not more often, Paul?

Credit to United players and management for turning it around in the second half. Heaven knows what was said in the dressing room at half time, but it worked. Man City . . .

  • In a week when Ray Wilkins, one of the classiest English footballers I ever saw at close quarters passed away, it was pleasing to see so much good football played in the Champions League. Ray would have enjoyed watching those matches.

Ronaldo's overhead kick grabbed the headlines and it was a fantastic goal. What I enjoyed most about it was his positioning. His reading of where the cross would end up and how he adjusted his body in anticipation of what he planned to do, was at least as impressive as the execution of the goal. If not more . . .

  • As I write, Liverpool have grabbed a late win at Crystal Palace, whose own odds for relegation will now have been cut from the 7/1 that was available prior to that defeat.

My player of the domestic season, Mohamed Salah, scored the late winner for Liverpool. That was his 37th goal in all competitions this season. If he carries on scoring next season as he has this, Liverpool will do well to hold on to him. The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona are sure to come calling and try to tempt the Egyptian to Spain.

    Salah is a . . .

  • It never ceases to amaze me how often a football club sacks its manager moments after I have backed that team to lose their next match. So often after there is a change of management, the players of the struggling team pull their fingers out and go and win their next match.

So it was that Charlton fired their manager hours after I had included the in form Plymouth to win at Charlton. A reasonable assumption considering Plymouth's unbeaten run and Charlton being without a win in four. But, hey presto! The one time Charlton talisman Lee Bowyer became . . .

  • International friendlies. Two words to send a shiver through any punter. Why bother with these matches? The most likely winners are priced ludicrously short in the betting market. And then there are the countries who use these pointless matches to road test players. Gareth Southgate will likely do that for England. I don't envy him his task of finding a squad that can impress in Russia this summer.

Wales are on a tour of China under the new management of Ryan Giggs. Of course Wales should win these games, especially if Gareth Bale is in the starting line up . . .

  • The Champions League games this past midweek saw Manchester United knocked out of the tournament by Sevilla. A club ex Manchester Unuted player Ray Wilkins had labelled one that would be in the bottom six of the Premier League and which Paul Scholes had dismissed as one United would beat comfortably.

What is it about the blinkered, little Island mentality of the English (not the British) that makes them think the best football in the world is only played in England, that all those foreign teams, with the exception of Barcelona and Real Madrid, are "ordinary" and that they would . . .

  • Nobody in their right mind would condone the actions of some West Ham fans last weekend. Throwing coins at people is out of order, even when it is David Sullivan on the receiving end.

But I get the frustration of so many West Ham supporters. The majority are reasonable people. It the 60's it was a family club and it was clear from the pictures from last Saturday that many parents still take their children to watch the Hammers. But I suspect some of those children will not be keen to return to the soulless London Stadium.

    West Ham . . .

  • Midweek went well. 7 winning tips from 9 between Monday and Tuesday. They were:- Juventus to qualify at 21/10, Wolves 21/20, Aston Villa 21/20, Middlesbrough 11/10, Cristiano Ronaldo anytime goal 6/5, Brentford 9/10 and Fulham 24/25. At the time of writing, there is one outstanding tip for  game on Thursday.

In days of old you would have found me staring at the television set, watching page 888 of Ceefax as the latest scores came on screen. Some reading this may be too young to remember those halcyon times.

On Tuesday night you could . . .

  • The season is hotting up, both on the domestic front and in the Champions League.

There is an obsession with the Premier League these days. A league I still believe to be hyped to a level that is not warranted. Presently, the Premier League includes one team playing lovely football - in the image of their manager - and a lot of also rans.

Nonetheless, the fight to stay in it and to be promoted to it, continues apace. The race to be one of the top two in the Championship come the end of the season is a competitive one. While . . .

  • Who would be a football manager? Not me.

Arsene Wenger is mystified why his future at Arsenal is constantly under question when he has given 21 years to the club. He said he has turned down jobs from around the world to remain loyal to Arsenal. The trouble is, on the pitch, the side is regressing. He is addicted to football and cannot imagine a life without the game. He is being backed by the ultimate owner of the club, American businessman, Stan Kroenke. While others are putting pressure on the owner to appoint a new, younger manager, Kroenke appears . . .
