  • The winning midweek bets were wins for Middlesbrough 1/2 (NAP), Reading to win at 19/10, Sevilla to win at 13/10 and both teams to score in the game between Hull and Wolves (19/20).

The bookies had the last laugh on the first weekend of the Premier League. But football will remain more popular with punters than is the case for horse racing these days. Bookies take more bets on football and, of course, offer odds about a multitude of possibilities in a match. First player to spit is about the only market not covered. Yet!

  • Well that was a fascinating weekend of football. Not if you're a punter, perhaps. Bookies were laughing their way to the bank with some unexpected Premier League results such as Huddersfield winning their first game back in the top flight, and Burnley winning at Chelsea. Anyone out there have that win double? No, thought not.

Someone who only began betting on football last weekend has probably run for the hills by now. Fear not. Normal service will resume in due course. The season will settle down and results will become more predictable.

First appearances tell you all is not . . .

  • Members received my season long predictions a few days ago. Since then Burnley have sold Andre Gray to potential relegation rivals, Watford. Madness in a way and it is hard to believe that Burnley boss Sean Dyche can be happy that the many who scored 9 of their 39 goals last season has been sold. Yes, the money is good, but will Dyche be handed enough of the £18 million to adequately replace Gray, and what do you get for that money these days?

Incredibly the price about Burnley being relegated has not shortened since that transfer. They are still . . .

  • Another football season begins and I take out from the cupboard my crystal ball. Shaped like a football, it is not sponsored by some corporate company. It's just a plain, old fashioned crystal ball I use each August in the hope that, come the following May, I appear to have all the skills of someone who can look into the future and predict some ups and downs in four divisions.

Last season went well. When I look back at the predictions offered to existing members twelve months ago, forgive me for patting myself on the back. Many punters do . . .

  • It's back!

Football returns to England with matches in the Championship, League 1 and League 2.

Members of VG Tips enjoyed a very profitable time of things last season and I am hoping for more of the same this campaign.

Much has changed during the summer and it will be weeks before it is clear which clubs are going to do be the most reliable to back. Across the leagues, managers and players have come and gone. The Premier League begins a week from now.

Next week I will be sending out my pre-season tips for the season . . .

  • Chelsea won the Premier League, as predicted here last September. Tottenham ran them close and in many other seasons, Spurs would have won the title. But Antonio Conte made Chelsea hard to beat  from October 1st onwards and players who had downed tools for their previous manager, pulled their fingers out for their current one.

Spurs fans can celebrate finishing higher than local rivals, Arsenal. It is the case that Tottenham have played some attractive football this season. Their problem next season may be having to play their home matches at Wembley. That plan did not work well for Arsenal . . .

  • Almost there. The very end of the domestic football season beckons.

Outside of the Premier League, it's play off time. Bradford and Millwall have already booked their League 2 play off final places at Wembley on May 20th.

Now four clubs in the Championship and League 2 play the first legs of their own play off semi finals. So much at stake, especially for whichever club wins the Championship play off final at Wembley on Monday May 29th.

In the Premier League it surely must be time for Chelsea to be crowned Champions, as I predicted to members of . . .

  • In midweek we saw Cristiano Ronaldo score a hat trick in the home leg of their Champions League semi-final against city neighbours, Atletico. Where would Real Madrid be without Ronaldo? Not in the Champions League final, that's for sure. While Marcelo has also impressed for Real this season, the team is too dependent on Ronaldo. He can be stopped. Has been stopped.

Juventus may well be the side to stop him. Presuming Juventus qualify after winning their first leg at Monaco 0-2, I fancy Juve to stop Ronaldo. After all, former Barcelona defender Dani Alves has come . . .

  • The winning bets last week included a win for Bournemouth at odds of 29/20. Portsmouth to win paid off at odds of 17/10 and Plymouth to win at 3/4 also came good. Now Plymouth must win at Grimsby next Saturday if my pre-season, August 3rd 2016 tip to members for Plymouth to win League 2 - at odds of 14/1 - is to pay off.

Two win/draw no bet tips last weekend also ensured I got my stake back on the games between Fulham and Brentford and the Manchester derby.

Huddersfield Town face being fined for . . .

  • The winning bets over the past five days were:- Christian Benteke to score anytime for Crystal Palace at Liverpool - a good bet at odds of 3/1.

Aston Villa win at Evens. Newcastle win at odds of 1/2. Chelsea v Spurs both teams to score at 4/5. Sergio Aguero to score anytime for Manchester City at 19/20 and Bournemouth win at 10/11.

More promotion and relegation issues have been settled since last weekend. But there are still several outstanding issues as the season nears its very end in England.

The race for fourth place in the . . .
