  • I heard a passionate phone-in call from a West Brom at the weekend. He spoke well. A supporter for decades, he said that results and impending relegation were not the reason he did not go to watch West Brom play Southampton in the FA Cup. It was, he said, because he had no respect for the West Brom players who decided that the way to represent the club on a 'jolly' in Spain was to get pissed, go for a McDonalds at 5.30am, make the Barcelona taxi driver go in to the branch of McDonalds to collect their . . .

  • So PSG aren't all many cracked them up to be. I for one am not surprised. And Liverpool went to Portugal and thrashed Porto. A great result for the Reds. English teams are back front and centre in the Champions League, and that's good news. But it should not be a great surprise.

The French league is poor. PSG lead it by 12 points not because they are a great side. It's because the opposition is weak. Porto, who won the Champions League in 2004 when managed by Jose Mourinho, top a Portuguese league that lacks strength . . .

  • Manchester City continue to run away with the Premier League. It's really a one team league with lots of also runs making up the numbers.

If Manchester United under Jose Mourinho are the second best team, then the Premier League is not all that, is it?

Manchester United lost at Newcastle. Something that should not happen when you have acquired so much talent in your squad. It seems to me United are collecting players in the manner that Real Madrid did a few years ago. But failing to build a team ethic. Jose Mourinho has for a long time . . .

  • Managers, they come and they go.

Leeds fans were up in arms (again) this week when the club appointed as their latest manager a man who had previously declared his hatred of the club. But, let's face it, unless you are a Leeds United fan, you have a healthy dislike for Leeds. Don't you?

I think Leeds supporters should be glad that Paul Heckinbottom has walked out on Barnsley only a week after signing a new contract at Oakwell. He's one of the more promising young British managers around. You have to be bold, or persuaded by . . .

  • I heard another tipster suggest the three to go down from the Premier League this season will be Huddersfield, Newcastle and Swansea. I hope he is right as that was my 66/1 treble tipped to members back in August. I had a hopeful tenner on that bet.

As my recent new post to members suggested, the goalposts have moved to some extent, but that treble is still possible.

Southampton and/or  West Brom could yet spoil that bet as they are in great danger of relegation. And they are far from alone.

After I sent out that new Ups . . .

  • New members should know that each August - before a ball is kicked - I send out to VG Tips members my pre-season fancies for the upcoming football season. My analysis and tips sent to them on August 7th 2017 are looking decent right now. Of the 24 pre-season tips, 8 look set to pay off, 8 could go either way and 8 look set to lose. So far, so good.

But, of course, we now approach what Sir Alex Ferguson called 'Squeaky Bum Time.'

In the last few days managers of clubs staring Premier League relegation in the face . . .

  • Did I count my chickens before they were hatched? I refer to my pre-season bet on Swansea to be relegated. Last August, at odds of 7/2. I tipped the Swans to go down and, for much of this season the bet looked sound. But Carlos Carvalhal appears to have revived the Swansea players. The team has a slight pulse after all. From being long odds on for relegation only a week or so ago, you can now get 1/2 about them dropping into the Championship. Should you take that price now? That depends on if you think . . .

  • Agents. I've known a few. There are a couple of decent human beings out there who also happen to be agents for footballers. No, honestly. There really are.

They are in the minority. The worst are those who operate from overseas, don't watch football and would not dream of investing into the game one penny of the millions they pocket from transfer fees.

The agent representing Alexis Sanchez looks set to pocket £10 million from Manchester United, or whichever club the Arsenal player ends up joining. It is an obscene sum. What has the man done for £10 . . .

  • Since we last conversed about football, Phillipe Coutinho has got the move he wanted, Barcelona paying £142 million for the Liverpool midfielder who joins the best side in Spain on a five and a half year contract.

At Barcelona the powers that be can be voted in or out of office by the members, and those supporters get impatient if the bosses do not spend enough money on purchasing players. The club sold Neymar for a world record fee and fans wanted to know when and how some of that cash would be spent. Coutinho will be groomed to be . . .
