Football tips

  • Football is so often about passion. And no games come more passionate than big city derbies.

This weekend we have the Rangers v Celtic fixture in Scotland. At odds of 4/6, many punters will fancy backing Celtic to win.

On Sunday, in Sheffield, we have the Steel City derby. In May of 2016, Sheffield Wednesday were one match away from putting two divisions between them and neighbouring United. But now, following the Blades promotion to the Championship, the so called Steel City Derby is back.

Over many years I have more often than not backed the draw in matches . . .

  • The winning midweek tips included all four correct predictions in the Championship. Sheffield Wednesday at 21/20, Leeds at 8/11, Sheffield United at 29/20 and the draw between Wolves and Bristol City at 14/5. In League 1, Shrewsbury won for members of VG Tips at odds of 11/8.

In total it was 5 winning tips from 8 selections. That'll do nicely, especially at those odds.

After some European action in midweek, Premier League teams return to domestic action this weekend and football welcomes back Roy Hodgson. He's the new boss at Selhurst Park.

  • So the first Premier League manager to be sacked award goes to....Frank De Boer. He's been fired by Crystal Palace after only four games (and no goals). The Chairman wanted to change the way Palace played football. A club famed for its 'up and at 'em' style of play was put in the hands of a coach who believes in total football.

That's like asking me to place bets on the plethora of TV shows bookies want you to bet on. I don't even know who the people are on so called 'reality' shows. So I . . .

  • The transfer window was its usual bizarre self. The sooner clubs cannot sign anyone after the start of the season, or at least until January, the better for all of us. Especially us punters. We make predictions before a ball has been kicked in August and then, a matter of weeks later, some clubs buy like there is no tomorrow while others sell the family silver. All of a sudden, the likely fortunes of those clubs change dramatically.

I found it interesting that a few players turned down the chance to join the current Premier League champions Chelsea. Do they . . .

  • It's funny how you can have a brilliant time of things betting on one sport on one particular weekend, only for bets on the other sport to let you down.

Last weekend members of VG Tips had a good time of things at the races. A hat trick of big price winners. When it came to the football my selections were few in number. But were all rubbish.

This may not be what new annual members Riki and Henru want to be reading right now, they having wisely just taken advantage of the cut price one year offer that . . .

  • Some weeks there are plenty of prices to attract a punter who loves betting on football. You can be spoilt for choice. On other weekends, there might be very little to entice you, largely due to the odds on offer. This weekend falls into the latter category, at least for me.

I have to look a little deeper, perhaps for some other bets rather than which team might win a particular game. Which player is in scoring form and is a decent price to score anytime? Which player has a good 'assist' record and might be a bet to lay . . .

  • The winning midweek bets were wins for Middlesbrough 1/2 (NAP), Reading to win at 19/10, Sevilla to win at 13/10 and both teams to score in the game between Hull and Wolves (19/20).

The bookies had the last laugh on the first weekend of the Premier League. But football will remain more popular with punters than is the case for horse racing these days. Bookies take more bets on football and, of course, offer odds about a multitude of possibilities in a match. First player to spit is about the only market not covered. Yet!

    I . . .

  • Well that was a fascinating weekend of football. Not if you're a punter, perhaps. Bookies were laughing their way to the bank with some unexpected Premier League results such as Huddersfield winning their first game back in the top flight, and Burnley winning at Chelsea. Anyone out there have that win double? No, thought not.

Someone who only began betting on football last weekend has probably run for the hills by now. Fear not. Normal service will resume in due course. The season will settle down and results will become more predictable.

First appearances tell you all is not . . .

  • Members received my season long predictions a few days ago. Since then Burnley have sold Andre Gray to potential relegation rivals, Watford. Madness in a way and it is hard to believe that Burnley boss Sean Dyche can be happy that the many who scored 9 of their 39 goals last season has been sold. Yes, the money is good, but will Dyche be handed enough of the £18 million to adequately replace Gray, and what do you get for that money these days?

Incredibly the price about Burnley being relegated has not shortened since that transfer. They are still . . .

  • Another football season begins and I take out from the cupboard my crystal ball. Shaped like a football, it is not sponsored by some corporate company. It's just a plain, old fashioned crystal ball I use each August in the hope that, come the following May, I appear to have all the skills of someone who can look into the future and predict some ups and downs in four divisions.

Last season went well. When I look back at the predictions offered to existing members twelve months ago, forgive me for patting myself on the back. Many punters do . . .
