  • The midweek winning bets included the draw between Ipswich and Brentford at a nice price of 11/4. There were also wins for Leeds at 10/11, Atletico Madrid at 4/5, Middlebrough at 5/11 and both teams to score Liverpool v PSG at odds of 4/9.

Sheffield United could only draw so let down one of my accumulators. Cristiano Ronaldo getting sent off and Shakthar Donestk failing to win their game brought down the other one. Such is life. Onwards.

So who still fancies Manchester City to win the Champions League? Not me. But then I'm . . .

  • Last weekend's domestic action delivered a mix bag for members of VG Tips.

Single win bets included:- Crystal Palace win at 6/4 and Wilfried Zaha to score anytime for them at 23/10. Wins for Charlton at 27/10, Lincoln 11/10 and Brentford at 4/5. Both Teams To Score between Peterborough and Portsmouth also paid off at odds of 4/6.

I'd like to welcome Douglas to VG Tips. Always good to welcome newcomers to my residential home for profitable punters. I promise to take as much care of him as I do others, including . . .

  • What have we learned so far regarding the home nations countries competing in the Nations League?

Marcus Rashford is still an exciting talent who does best with a Gareth Southgate arm around him rather than the scowl of club manager Jose Mourinho. Rashford looks to be the best goalscoring hope for England after Harry Kane, who looks to me as though he is running on  fumes. I have all the time in the world for Kane, especially his determination to play football come what may. But he look knackered to me in the last three England World Cup matches and . . .

  • So that Nations League thingy, about which I was so doubtful, worked out rather well on Saturday for members of VG Tips.

I offered them three betting tips. All three paid out. Luxembourg did something they are very unaccustomed to doing. They scored four goals. I had tipped them to win at home against Moldova not least because odds of 7/5 and 13/10 were on offer from bookies. Generous when you considered that going into the Nations League tie, Moldova had lost their previous five away games and drawn only one of their last six games. Moldova must . . .

  • This past week I have listened to a handful of footballing people try to explain the rules and purpose of the UEFA Nations League. It is an attempt to make friendlies more competitive. To make them more even and give countries that normally would not have a hope in hell of making the 2020 European Championships an opportunity to be involved in two years time.

Forgive me if I suggest they still look like friendlies, only dressed up in another name. Don't ask me to explain how the groups and then the knockout stages of the Nations League will . . .

  • I would imagine you are as bored of listening and reading about Jose Mourinho as I am of writing about him.

As I have written elsewhere on the website, I don't think he is a happy man in himself. I believe he fell out of love with football during his time at Real Madrid and the break he had between a second unhappy spell at Chelsea and his move to Manchester did not, as I hoped it would, see him return to action refreshed and more upbeat.

Instead he is more miserable than ever and it's only a . . .

  • I would like to welcome new members. The two John's and Michael (who has joined for life!)

Whether you join as a recurring monthly member, for one month only, for one year or, as Michael did, for ever; you are most welcome at the care home for profitable punters. I do my best to look after you.

I only wish they had joined prior to a fantastic first day at the York Ebor race meeting and some tasty returns on the football earlier this week.

Tuesday night went rather well with five winning bets from six suggested tips. Portsmouth . . .

  • The winning weekend tips - six from ten offered - were:- Middlesbrough at 9/5, both teams to score Tottenham v Fulham at Evens, Everton at 19/20, Portsmouth 10/11, Leeds 4/9 and Brentford to win at 6/10.

It almost goes without saying that this is very early in the season and the make up of the leagues will look different in May compared to now. But it is encouraging for me that the three teams I predicted would be relegated from the Championship come the end of the season, are the current bottom three. Also a club I . . .

  • So that all went rather well for VG Tips subscribers on the first full weekend of league fixtures in England.

9 single winning bets from my 12 selections and that 34/1 winning treble for us when Barnsley, Accrington Stanley and Leeds United all won.

The other accumulator I tipped up, for 5 teams to win at odds of 20/1, saw four of those sides win but Wolves only manage a 2-2 draw. So, for the sake of one more goal, that acca went . . .

  • It's that time. Out comes my crystal ball. I wish I had a time machine. Wouldn't it be great if, as a punter, we could travel forward to May of 2019 and see which football teams had gone up and down. Then we travel back to now and place our bets. Sadly only Dr. Who can do that. So I must make do with research, knowledge of what has happened in the past, the current state of play at certain clubs and that most favoured characteristic of mine - gut feeling.

For those who have not been with VG . . .
