  • So now we know. Only England fans will be travelling to Russia to cheer on their national side. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland missed out via the play offs. Fans of those countries will join Scottish and Welsh fans in staying at home next summer.

Anyone joining VG Tips for one year will be covered for my analysis and tips for the tournament in the summer of 2018. So if you are considering joining my lovely and loyal band of followers - and if you are into betting on football - then now is as good a time as any . . .

  • Terrible refereeing ensured Northern Ireland lost the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play off at home to Switzerland. The visitors won courtesy of a penalty that never was.

It’s going to be tough for the well managed Northern Ireland to reverse that scoreline this weekend. They are as big as 7/1 to win in Switzerland. But Switzerland are very good at home and I fear Northern Ireland will not be going to Russia next summer.

As for the Republic of Ireland and their two leg fixture against Denmark, this son of a Dubliner admits to finding . . .

  • One member of VG Tips has asked me who I now fancy to be relegated from the Premier League.

Some of my August, pre-season tips are looking good already, in all divisions. But there is a very long way to go this season and too often we can see the make up of a league change dramtically over winter.

I will not give my mid season promotion and relegation update tips to members until the turn of the year, but I do tell them now which three I fancy for the drop as at the start of November.

    They . . .

  • Tales of the unexpected. That's been the case so far in the domestic leagues this season. It has almost reached the situation whereby if the outcome of a match seems too obvious, it's possibly time to back the exact opposite outcome.

Previously hopeless Stoke win at fortress Watford. QPR beat high flying Wolves. League 1 leaders Shrewsbury lose at Peterborough. Coventry go to Luton and win 0-3.

At this relatively early stage of the season, the obvious does not always happen. It can pay to take a chance on the unexpected result from time to time.

    Can . . .

  • Last weekend's winning bets included a win for Leicester City at odds of 17/10, my NAP win was Sheffield United at 21/20, Derby won for members at odds of 13/10 and both teams to score Chelsea v Watford paid off at odds of 21/20.

High scoring, top of League 2 Luton Town killed my 17/1 accumulator. Derby, Sheffield United and the Chelsea v Watford game did the business for us. All Luton had to do was score one goal at Crawley, who had lost six of their previous seven home games. The match ended . . .

  • You know your luck is out when a team that has not scored for 8 matches wins, while another side that had yet to score all season, beat Chelsea. Those victories by Bolton and Crystal Palace brought down the combined 9 teams to win, 15/1 International/Domestic accumulator last weekend.

You have to laugh otherwise you'd go crazy.

There are few certainties at this stage of the season. Manchester City winning the Premier League appears to be one. It only seems to be a question of what margin they will open up on the club in second.

    I . . .

  • Sometimes we all get tempted to bet on an accumulator, even in International midweek.

Earlier in the week I did that. Time was too tight before the first match was played so I tweeted the 9 teams to win, 15/1 accumulator via @VGTIPS1

All the International sides won - albeit Hungary left it late to score. So now I pray for weekend wins by Chelsea, Manchester City and Shrewsbury Town. I know some members of VG Tips picked up on the late in the day bet. They follow me on Twitter @VGTIPS1 for football and @betonsportstips for racing.

  • We were so unlucky with the maginificent 7 accumulator last weekend.   Earlier on the Saturday, four clubs won for us but then Chelsea failed to score against Manchester City. So it was that the 19/1 bet fell down before the two matches were played in Spain. Close, but no cigar.

I am forever banging on about how important it is for punters to be patient. It is always tempting to try and win a big pay acca on one particular weekend. But what if you are prepared to wait over a week for a potential pay out? That’s . . .

  • It's a conspiracy! I am more and more convinced that those who run football clubs are getting my tips, then deciding to sack a failed manager, all to ensure that their team wins the first match without that boss, and so guarantee my accumulator falls down. It never ceases to amaze me how often a manager is fired within 24 hours of my placing such a bet.

This past midweek it was John Sheridan. He was sacked (not for the first time) as manager of Oldham Athletic, a team propping up League 1 and without a win since dinosaurs . . .

  • Manchester City are scoring goals for fun. Will their star names continue to do so in the depths of winter? So often in past years, when the weather going gets tough, the fancier overseas players go missing. City do look to have enough strength in depth to win the Premier League with something to spare.

But the experience of Jose Mourinho in this league is sure to be a bonus for Manchester United. They are keeping pace with their noisy neighbours. There is no love lost between Mourinho and City boss Pep Guardiola. They often clashed when rivals in La . . .
