As with people, some horses like the heat of battle and others do not.

I am now growing very concerned that the Aidan O'Brien trained Hunting Horn doesn't like a fight. That's only two races now but in both Hunting Horn has been racing fine until things get serious in the closing stages. He doesn't like being bumped. He was unlucky to some extent in both races, but was not going to win today at Chester. Disappointing. I fear O'Brien may pull Hunting Horn out of the Derby and my ambitious 66/1 ante-post . . .

The Roodee racecourse is a rather remarkable place. There are plans to redevelop the main stand. I like it as it is. Old fashioned. Rustic. Good looking.

The racecourse at Chester is pretty unique in this day and age. I like the place although I understand why some members of VG Tips, those who live in Chester, hate this week. All sorts of drunken hooray Henry's and Henrietta's make their way to Chester. Dressed in all their best clothing until, that is, alcohol and possibly bodily fluids ensure a dry cleaning bill is not too far away.

    I . . .

  • So who among you predicted Huddersfield Town would get a 0-0 draw away at Manchester City, and on the very day the Champions were presented with the Premier League trophy?

    No, not me either.

I have never known a football season like this past one. It has been the most extraordianry, unpredictable one that I can remember.

This past weekend alone, in addition to that amazing result in Manchester, we saw relegated Sunderland beat Champions Wolves 3-0 and Cardiff only manage to draw 0-0 at home against a poor Reading side. Not that it prevented Cardiff being . . .

Welcome to new members Vishall and Matthew and welcome back to David and Roger.

The sun shone down on Newmarket at the weekend and the racecourse looked to be in excellent condition.

I'm not convinced, however, that we can take too much out of the big races. Certainly not the 1000 Guineas on Sunday, won by 66/1 outsider, Billesdon Brook (a one time race winner for members of VG Tips).

Those favoured in the betting market were well beaten, including the favourite Happily and the likes of stablemate I Can Fly and Soliloquy. Frankly, I would take the . . .

The turf flat season proper begins here and now. At Newmarket on Saturday with the 2000 Guineas, followed by the 1000 Guineas on Sunday.

I am sorry I could not take up the kind offer from member John to join him and friends at their booked table for the meeting. Newmarket may well be bathed in bank holiday sunshine and there are few better places to be on a nice day than the home of flat racing. Superb track and some fine horses on display on both Saturday and Sunday.

It's early season so anything could happen. Some not . . .

  • I don't envy those football supporters who face a nervous weekend.

I'd much rather settle for mid table mediocrity than be involved in a relegation battle.

It's horrible, as a fan, to go into the last game of the season needing a point or three for your team to stay up. You have one eye on the match in front of you, and one ear tuned to the radio to hear how other clubs are getting on. Or worse, you rely on the Chinese whispers coming at you from all directions in the crowd. The number of . . .

The next racing selections will be available to members of VG Tips on Friday May 4th for racing the next day, Saturday May 5th.

They will include the best meeting of the day, the 2000 Guineas meet at Newmarket.

After that, there will be selections on Saturday for Sunday, including one of my favourite races of the flat season, the 1000 Guineas.

The next football tips will be available on Thursday for weekend fixtures.

  • It should be a gripping weekend next Saturday and Sunday as the domestic football season comes to a boiling point.

In the Championship, it's the last set of fixtures on Sunday May 6th.

Cardiff need only to win at home against hopeless Reading for them to be promoted to the Premier League. Fulham must go to Birmingham, who should escape relegation but are not mathematically safe. All Fulham can do is win and hope that Cardiff slip up. Unlikely.

That would leave Fulham in the play offs along with Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and either Derby, Preston or Millwall.

    Derby . . .
