  • With the Met Office promising a hot and dry week for Royal Ascot, I feel able to offer selections for the first day of racing there 48 hours in advance. Woe betide the Met Office if storm and tempest arrives before Tuesday!

There is a chance that a selection or two will be withdrawn, even at this late stage. If that happens, and if I have an alternative selection, I will be in touch again with members before Tuesday.

I have selections in the fist four races on Tuesday. I always encourage members to read the analysis, and not simply . . .

  • Some days are for favourite backing punters. Others offer opportunities for each way backers. Those who, like me, love studying racecards for big field handicaps in the hope of finding one at a big price.

The selection might not win, but could well return punters good profit at a double figure price. I'd rather win returns backing a horse at 25/1, that finishes placed in the frame, than backing a short price winning favourite. That's me.

One member said to me a while ago that my best tips came in those sort of races and he was . . .

  • At the time of writing it appears the the Queen may miss the second day of Royal Ascot next week. She may have to be stuck with the state opening of parliament and reading the Queen's speech written by a failing Prime Minister and her government.

The Queen will not be happy with that.

She loves Royal Ascot. Say what you wish about the Royal family but, like her mother before her, the Queen loves watching racing. As do I. That's where the similarity between me and the occupants of Buckingham Palace end.

Next week promises some quality . . .

  • Royal Ascot is only a week away and my form study head is already concentrating on some of the top class races to be staged on what look set to be sunny days.

The ground at Ascot should be drying out, therefore, and we can look forward to racing on genuinely good ground. I am not interested in all the coverage of fashion at Royal Ascot, or what colour of hat the Queen will be wearing each day. Some people bet on the latter.

I stick to the horses and I will be sending members of VG Tips my ante . . .

  • Saturday saw our betting day begin well when the Mark Johnston trained Cardsharp, available at 9/4 when selected for members of VG Tips, won at Beverley. But I was annoyed at another jockey in that race. The newcomer called Cool Spirit was the one to take out of the race for the future.

Available as a 16/1 each way selection on Friday night, Cool Spirit looked set to finish second coming to the winning post, but Doyle eased up earlier than he needed and Cool Spirit - which has gone into my notebook for next time - lost the all . . .

  • There's all manner of factors you can opt to focus on when it comes to punting.

If a particular trainer has his stable in good form it can prove profitable to stick with them, Of course, any good run of form has to end one day and you could be backing that trainer on the day the good run goes bad. But on Saturday I am backing horses by a couple of trainers having a good time of things of late.

Another factor is the weather and the ground conditions. With heavy rain scheduled to fall on ground that . . .

  • Betting is all about personal choice. Some punters are more than happy to back horses at short odds on prices. I am not.

For as long as I can remember, I have preferred to back horses each way where the price permits such bets. I am not adverse to backing horses to win only. Some of my favourite winners of all time were backed only to come home first. But, of all the truisms spoken about betting on racing, the one that says you'll end up in the poor house should you constantly back odds on shots; is the . . .

  • So the Derby is over for another year. My 10/1 ante-post each way tip, Cliffs of Moher, looked to have the race in the bag but then up popped the late running stablemate, Wings of Eagles. She flew home to win on the line. An exciting win and one that made the bookies smile. The 40/1 winner was lightly backed in the market.

I'm not sure we can take too much out of that race. It was far from the best field to ever race in a Derby and I wouldn't be convinced that the . . .

  • So the Oaks is over for another year and the filly Enable - a tip from me when only third the previous outing - duly won, and won well. No excuses. She stayed the distance. Rhododendron didn't. The heavily backed favourite could only finish second. So the bookies won that race - and do we not like that? The heavens opened as the Oaks began and a thunderclap scared the horses. We'll have to see on the day if the rain makes any significant difference to the going on Saturday.

Now attention turns to the Classic of all domestic classic flat . . .

  • The Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning that could include Epsom. Heavy rain and thunderstorms will be isolated but the Epsom Downs could catch some rain on the day.

If it is a pain for us punters not to know what the weather will do at any one racetrack, imagine what it is like for trainers who send their horses all over the country, not knowing if they will be racing on anything from firm through to soft conditions.

Some of their decisions are made late in the day, and that may be the case for some trainers . . .
