  • You know your luck is out when a team that has not scored for 8 matches wins, while another side that had yet to score all season, beat Chelsea. Those victories by Bolton and Crystal Palace brought down the combined 9 teams to win, 15/1 International/Domestic accumulator last weekend.

You have to laugh otherwise you'd go crazy.

There are few certainties at this stage of the season. Manchester City winning the Premier League appears to be one. It only seems to be a question of what margin they will open up on the club in second.

    I . . .

  • Two excellent winners of the big two feature flat races last Saturday. Withhold, a 12/1 each way selection, won the big field Casarewitch Handicap at Newmarket while my 8/1 each way option to the odds on favourite, U S Navy Flag, won the Dewhurst, also at Newmarket.

A nice way to end the very profitable flat season. Or is it?

National Hunt racing fans have been anxious. They want to know when I will begin attacking the new jumps season with gusto. Next week is the answer.

I was tempted by some race meetings on Wednesday and Thursday . . .

  • I was getting a little concerned when the day at Newmarket began with a bout of 'Seconditus.' Gavota having to make do with a runner up finish, beaten by a 25/1 outsider whose jockey had the common sense to race against the rail. That ensured he won the race while Gavota, out in the middle of the track, wandered.

Sound and Silence had earlier also finished second, narrowly beaten by Abel Handy.

But all came good when my 11/1 tip, Laurens, won the high profile Group 1 Fillies' Mile, just beating September. The pre race favourite, Happily, was . . .

  • Newmarket looks like being sun kissed on Saturday. Drying ground will suit the very impressive Expert Eye, the 4/7 favourite to land the Dewhurst Stakes. Only nine go to post for that 3pm race on Saturday and I see that Ryan Moore has opted to ride US Navy Flag rather than Seahenge.

Also on Saturday is the Cesarewitch handicap. My type of race. A Class 2 handicap of 36 intended runners so bookies should be offering returns about the first five or six past the post and there should be plenty of opportunities for me and fellow each way . . .

  • Sometimes we all get tempted to bet on an accumulator, even in International midweek.

Earlier in the week I did that. Time was too tight before the first match was played so I tweeted the 9 teams to win, 15/1 accumulator via @VGTIPS1

All the International sides won - albeit Hungary left it late to score. So now I pray for weekend wins by Chelsea, Manchester City and Shrewsbury Town. I know some members of VG Tips picked up on the late in the day bet. They follow me on Twitter @VGTIPS1 for football and @betonsportstips for racing.

    Please feel . . .

  • We had a profitable time of things at VG Tips last weekend.

The impressive winners were:- Roly Poly (5/1) and Darkanna (9/2)

The profitable placed punts included:- Flying Sparkle and Snow Falcon, 14/1 each way tips when selected for members, they each finished second.

Snow Falcon goes forward to the English Cesarewitch this weekend and looks a big price at 25/1. Snow Falcon was only beaten in the Irish version by an opponent that was 20 pounds better off on Sunday. As for the chances of Snow Falcon going one better this weekend, we shall first . . .

  • We are almost at the cross over point. The time when I turn my back on the flat season, as it nears its proper end, and turn my attention to the jumps.

We still have Champions Day to savour at Ascot later this month. The best of the best we’ve enjoyed watching this past flat season, taking each other on. Or, at least, some of them.

The best National Hunt trainers are beginning to dust off their best jump racing horses and some appear for the first time this coming weekend, most of them in Ireland.

    But it’s . . .

  • 24 hours can be a long time in the world of punting,

Last Saturday was a bad one for me. Hands up. It was the worst day for a very long time. At least at the races, if not on the football front.

A couple of members ran for the hills. Fair enough. They pays their money, they must make their choice. That’s only right and proper.

But then, the next day, I tipped three winners from the four races I selected for subscribers to VG Tips. All three were decent prices at the time of selection. Battaash at . . .

  • We were so unlucky with the maginificent 7 accumulator last weekend.   Earlier on the Saturday, four clubs won for us but then Chelsea failed to score against Manchester City. So it was that the 19/1 bet fell down before the two matches were played in Spain. Close, but no cigar.

I am forever banging on about how important it is for punters to be patient. It is always tempting to try and win a big pay acca on one particular weekend. But what if you are prepared to wait over a week for a potential pay out? That’s . . .

  • Aidan O’Brien is a man steeped in racing tradition. Knowing how to get the best from horses is in his blood.

His team at Coolmore had an excellent day on Saturday. Not only did Clemmie prove to be the real deal, but he also trained winners including 10/1 shot US Navy Flag.

Some of his horses were delayed in getting to racecourses on the day. Not a bother. They performed well once they got there.

On Sunday he sends some of his best horses to France in the hope of winning further high profile races, beating . . .
