  • The English weather has been the chief enemy of punters during this so called British summer.

The heavens opened at York late on Wednesday morning and, within the blink of an eye, the official ground conditions altered from Good to Firm, Good in Places right through to Good to Soft, Soft in places. It was one of the fastest changes I have ever witnessed.

I knew rain was expected at York on Wednesday and I told members of VG Tips that the Met Office had forecast rainfall. But I don't think anyone expected the deluge of rain that fell . . .

  • So, Vernon, why did you pick the winning 25/1 shot Mattmu as one of your two each way shots for the Class 2 handicap at Ripon last Saturday? It's been asked of me once or twice since.

The clues were there. Long time members know I love to spot a previous Group class contender dropping back down into handicap company.

I ask myself other questions when studying the form for handicaps. Has there handicap rating dropped? Has the horse raced well at that course in the past? Are the jockey bookings and draw good looking ones?

    True, there . . .

  • It's not only punters who, more and more, focus on the better quality racing. The better jockeys are doing the same.

The likes of Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore now have their eyes set on York for four days of top quality racing next week.

Yes, Frankie and Ryan competed today - each having a winner at Newbury - but both now restrict how often they travel long distances to ride in ordinary races (of which there are not shortage).

Much is made elsewhere of the Champion flat jockey title, but these guys have been there and done that and don . . .

  • No punter should stick with one jockey to the point of obsession. But any punter should get to know not only who are the best jockeys, but which do best for them over a period of time.

I spotted the ability of Ryan Moore in his early days in the saddle. I saw that early confidence justified when he won for me at 66/1 during one night meeting at Sandown so many years ago that I cannot even recall the name of the horse.

As with any jockey, he rides more winners at some courses than at others. He . . .

  • The winning midweek bets were wins for Middlesbrough 1/2 (NAP), Reading to win at 19/10, Sevilla to win at 13/10 and both teams to score in the game between Hull and Wolves (19/20).

The bookies had the last laugh on the first weekend of the Premier League. But football will remain more popular with punters than is the case for horse racing these days. Bookies take more bets on football and, of course, offer odds about a multitude of possibilities in a match. First player to spit is about the only market not covered. Yet!

    I . . .

  • Well that was a fascinating weekend of football. Not if you're a punter, perhaps. Bookies were laughing their way to the bank with some unexpected Premier League results such as Huddersfield winning their first game back in the top flight, and Burnley winning at Chelsea. Anyone out there have that win double? No, thought not.

Someone who only began betting on football last weekend has probably run for the hills by now. Fear not. Normal service will resume in due course. The season will settle down and results will become more predictable.

First appearances tell you all is not . . .

  • It is that time of the year once more. The day when I ignore, rightly to my mind, the public relations man created race meeting called the 'Shergar Cup.'

Female jockeys against the men, Britain and Ireland against the rest of the world, foreign jockeys who would never get to ride at Ascot but for this meeting, dreamt up challenges and races where the form book goes out of the window. The Shergar Cup is actually the 'It's a Knock Out' of racing and I ignore the meeting each year. Watch it if you wish, but my advice is . . .

  • Members received my season long predictions a few days ago. Since then Burnley have sold Andre Gray to potential relegation rivals, Watford. Madness in a way and it is hard to believe that Burnley boss Sean Dyche can be happy that the many who scored 9 of their 39 goals last season has been sold. Yes, the money is good, but will Dyche be handed enough of the £18 million to adequately replace Gray, and what do you get for that money these days?

Incredibly the price about Burnley being relegated has not shortened since that transfer. They are still . . .
