  • Courtesy of Crystal Palace missing a 90th minute penalty, runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City remain unbeaten this season. That was a narrow escape for City. Their star player Kevin De Bruyne is being carried off the pitch as I write and he would be a big loss to City were that injury a serious one.

Palace have improved since the arrival of Roy Hodgson. So often that happens. A new manager comes in and results improve. Perish the thought that some players at some clubs deliberately perform poorly in order to get a manager a manager sacked.

    Most of . . .

  • You have to wonder who makes the big decisions at football clubs these days. So often it is not the manager. I cannot believe the likes of Bill Shankly would have put up with some of the shenanigans and ludicrous decisions made in the boardrooms of football clubs these days.

There are suits making important decisions who have not only not played the game, they talk a completely different language from anyone involved in football.

What an utter mess those who walked in to take over Swansea City have made of a club that was once seen as progressive and . . .

The clues are often there when choosing which horses to back at competitive race meetings. At Leopardstown on Thursday...

  • Well that was quite a day at Leopardstown. While Wednesday was full of on track incident, Thursday was a profitable one for me and members of VG Tips.

7/1 tip Flawless Escape got the day off to a great start for us and for trainer Gordon Elliott. Well backed on the day, Flawless Escape came past the post at the much shorter price of 11/4.

In race 2, a race of 29 runners, my two each way tips finished third and fourth at odds of 9/1 and 25/1 respectively. I like that sort of profit every . . .

  • It's official. I have kicked myself for the very last time in 2017.

Anibale Fly was the reason. Having told members that 16/1 was a big each way price for Anibale Fly, I chose another as my second, much more speculative each way bet. Fool!

At least Squouateur, my first choice each way pick, returned a little profit in third. At Kempton Park, Politologue did indeed prove to be a value winner, even at a short price such as 8/15 and 1/2.

Kayf Grace was the ultimate value winner on the day. 7/1 when tipped . . .

  • So Might Bite is sane. Hurrah! Trainer Nicky Henderson said that my long ago tipped winner of the King George VI Chase is a handsome beast who likes to show off. And he certainly did that on Boxing Day. The jumping was glorious. Even when under pressure from a 50/1 outsider coming to the last, his jumping was beautiful to watch. When something gets close to him, he pulls out more and Might Bite now looks like beating a serious contender for the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in March. He is available at 13/2 and 6 . . .

  • There are eleven race meetings in the UK and Ireland on Tuesday. There was a time in the distant past when I would have studied every race at all of those meetings. Not now. It was when the men in white coats came knocking at my door several years ago that I thought I might not be spending my time wisely.

You can bet too often and it is always worth having in mind that the bookies want you to do that. Resist the temptation.

It is a fact that the quality horses will be aimed at the feature races . . .

  • So this is Christmas and what have we done?

Safe to say we'll finish the year ahead of the bookie yet again. Which is all I care about. It really doesn't matter if you bet with small or big stakes. Profit is what matters. In an era when you get bugger all returns for your savings in a bank, and when the bitcoin bubble might have burst, at least temporarily, there are two ways to make money from bookmakers.

The first is to buy shares in the companies. I have found that to be very profitable in the . . .
