  • The weekend sees the return to racing of some big names.

Cue Card, Coneygree, Our Duke are just three that will be in action. The last named is an odds on favourite to land the feature race at Down Royal on Saturday. He should do so but, personally, I can’t be backing odds on shots at this early stage of the jumps season. Even odds on shots as good as Our Duke. He faces the more experienced Road to Respect and the hardly ever out of the first three, Sub Lieutenant (12/1).

    I am leaving that Northern Ireland . . .

  • One member of VG Tips has asked me who I now fancy to be relegated from the Premier League.

Some of my August, pre-season tips are looking good already, in all divisions. But there is a very long way to go this season and too often we can see the make up of a league change dramtically over winter.

I will not give my mid season promotion and relegation update tips to members until the turn of the year, but I do tell them now which three I fancy for the drop as at the start of November.

    They . . .

  • I’d like to welcome, or welcome back, those members who have signed up since last weekend when that lovely little grey called Smad Place won for members who took the early price I alerted them to. 25/1 was much better value than the 12/1 on offer when the former winner of the Hennessy Gold Cup won for us yet again.

New members should know that value is what I try to look for in the betting market. Is the price potentially in our favour, the punters, and not the bookies? The autumn has been littered with big . . .

  • Tales of the unexpected. That's been the case so far in the domestic leagues this season. It has almost reached the situation whereby if the outcome of a match seems too obvious, it's possibly time to back the exact opposite outcome.

Previously hopeless Stoke win at fortress Watford. QPR beat high flying Wolves. League 1 leaders Shrewsbury lose at Peterborough. Coventry go to Luton and win 0-3.

At this relatively early stage of the season, the obvious does not always happen. It can pay to take a chance on the unexpected result from time to time.

    Can . . .

  • Cogry was a 10/1 winner for members of VG Tips who took the early price about the horse that was the runner up in the Scottish Grand National last April. Cogry won the very competitive 16 runner Class 2 handicap chase today and my other each way selection, Doing Fine, was third at 15/2.

The suggested Ryam Moore win double also paid off when Sir Dancealot and Saxon Warrior won, the latter created an all time training record for Aidan O'Brien.

Attention on Sunday turns to the big obstacles at Aintree where the Old Roan Chase appears . . .

  • North Hill Harvey beat Sceau Royal by the margin of a neck on Friday. A neck! Agonising if you were on the runner up. A great feeling were you on the value winner from a young trainer going places, Dan Skelton.

It got more painful for me. Flying Pursuit was a 12/1 tip to members for a race at Doncaster. What do you know? That was also beaten by a neck. It's a conspiracy I tell you! But I tipped that one each way so we were still in profit.

Ryan Moore did win for us aboard 6 . . .

  • Three winners from five races selected last Wednesday, including a 9/1 triumph from trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Sean Levey.

The best of the flat season may be over, but there is still profit to be made if you are very selective and avoid the dross.

Friday sees a mixture of flat racing and day one of a jumps meeting at Cheltenham.

We'll know much more about the current form of these trainers, jockeys and horses when the Cheltenham Open meeting takes place in mid December. Right now, there are more questions than answers regarding the National Hunt . . .

  • Last weekend's winning bets included a win for Leicester City at odds of 17/10, my NAP win was Sheffield United at 21/20, Derby won for members at odds of 13/10 and both teams to score Chelsea v Watford paid off at odds of 21/20.

High scoring, top of League 2 Luton Town killed my 17/1 accumulator. Derby, Sheffield United and the Chelsea v Watford game did the business for us. All Luton had to do was score one goal at Crawley, who had lost six of their previous seven home games. The match ended . . .

  • So Saturday went rather well.

I was not keen on the whole concept of Champions Day when it was dreamt up and it has to be said that the meeting might have been killed off but for that year and day when Frankel blew us all away and gave flat racing a much needed boost.

Champions Day last Saturday went well. The wind was not as strong as forecast and some top horses performed at the top of their game. It is now clearly a popular fixture that will stay the distance.

At one point, late in the race, I . . .

  • A headwind of between 30 and 40 mph is going to play a part in the outcome of all the races today. The horses will get cover from the stands in the latter part of the races, but front running horses will not be able to grab as big a lead as they may be used to if the wind is as strong into their faces as the forecast suggests it will be.

Then there is the anticipated rainfall, on ground already described as soft. These races will not be to the liking of contenders who, to quote Colonel Jones . . .
