Coronet won for members on Thursday. She does hold her head in a strange position when racing, but the attractive looking grey filly raced away from the field to land the Group 2 Middleton Stakes with something to spare.

In the feature race, the Group 2 Dante Stakes, my tip Roaring Lion won easily, going away at the finish. He justified my continued confidence in him and John Gosden is minded to send him to the Derby at Epsom on June 2nd and take on the hot favourite Saxon Warrior once again.

I advised members on Wednesday that Roaring Lion . . .

My NAP won on Wednesday. Give and Take was an excellent, value price and quite comfortable winner. Tipped up to members of VG Tips when available at 4/1 on Tuesday night, the William Haggas trained Give and Take won under a last to first ride by jockey James Doyle.

It was a mixed day for the ever likeable Yorkshireman, William Haggas. His Tasleet incurred a minor injury overnight that prevented from him racing at York on Wednesday. The frustration of Haggas was evident in the interviews he gave after Give and Take won for members.

    One further thing to . . .

We all have our favourite racecourses. When it comes to flat racing, York is mine. The Knavesmire is a beautiful setting at any time of the year, whether racing is on or not.

Many moons ago I used to walk a dog I owned across the Knavesmire. You are allowed to and many people do. But not on race day.

For many years it was the location for hangings (before my time). Later on it was the location for the York golf course. It is prone to flood during periods of heavy rain but if the Met Office is correct . . .

There were some people who reckoned the much talked about low draw bias at Chester was a bit of a myth. I doubt they are saying that too loudly after the May meeting this past week.

By far the majority of the winners on The Roodee this past three days came out of single figure stall numbers. That's worth remembering when you next have a bet at Chester.

Another great looking racecourse awash with history is the Knavesmire at York. I miss the years of walking my dog on the Knavesmire on non racing days, obviously, and always enjoy . . .

Sir Ryan Moore (I knighted him long ago as the Queen is taking far too long over it) had a good day at Chester.

He won aboard my 5/4 tip Idaho but it was arguably his other winner, Rostropovich, that was more impressive when beating my fancy My Lord and Master into second. Ryan spoke highly of Rostropovich after the race and his words told me that, so far at least, this would be his second choice to ride in the Derby at Epsom early next month. Second behind the Evens favourite and stablemate, Saxon Warrior.

    Bookmakers reacted by . . .

  • So the deed is done. Cautious Carlos Carvalhal has paid the price for not not playing a proven goalscorer in Tammy Abraham and for reverting to type. For doing what he did previously at Sheffield Wednesday and trying to win football matches while playing, at most, one man up front. Why did he do it again? I don't know. Did he learn nothing from the meek manner in which his Wednesday said lost the Championship play off semi-final to Huddersfield? Clearly not.

Swansea City have confirmed that the man they almost offered a secure contract to in February . . .
