  • You see the names of racecourses such as Newbury and Epsom and you presume the racing on offer must be good quality. Not so tomorrow, Thursday.

Some muddling races the outcome about which I would not claim to be confident.

New, returning and long serving members know that I try to express confidence about certain days of racing and the races on offer. Last Saturday I had a good feeling about the races and the selections and I expressed that gut feeling - and we did very nicely, thank you.

I have studied all the cards for tomorrow and confess there . . .

A new month began with plenty of profit for my loyal members at VG Tips. Saturday July 1st was...

  • Saturday! Saturday!

What a day that was. A mixed bag. But a profitable one.

In brief, the winners were the much talked about (by me) Beckford. Tipped when available at 15/2 and 7/1, I was pleased that Beckford justified my confidence following all the analysis I put into the Group 2 Railway Stakes at the Curragh. The clues were there and I passed them on to my followers.

Home of the Brave was another good winner for us on the day, this time at Newmarket. Those punters who took the first price of 3/1 got the value . . .

  • With the Friday evening selections yet to race, Learn by Heart won for us at Doncaster but To Dibba was beaten into second at Yarmouth. Glittering Jewel was a non runner.

While the racing on Friday was moderate, the meetings on Saturday are anything but.

When will the racing authorities learn to spread the quality meetings across the week? Even from Thursday to Sunday. The answer is never. Too much racing on Saturday. Too little of quality for much of the rest of the week, outside of the Group class festivals.

The temptation for punters on such a busy Saturday . . .

  • At the time of writing the two evening selection for Thursday have yet to race. But Mazkeem won for us this afternoon. 6/1 when selected for members last night, the SP was still a good price of 4/1. All hail Ryan Moore!

June reaches its end with some modest meetings up and down the country on Friday.

The rain has fallen heavily on courses such as Newmarket, while others have escaped the deluge.

This coming weekend July dawns with ultra competitive Northumberland Plate up at Newcastle, and the Irish Derby over at the Curragh. That quality race meeting . . .

  • Royal Ascot is over with. For me and members it was a good one for the win selections, but a largely disappointing one for those backing each way selections. It's rare that I get so little joy with big priced each way picks.

33/1 shot Paco's Angel and 16/1 tip Cardsharp returned each way placed profit, but too many others finished outside the frame. Neola finished fifth at odds of 16/1 and Bet365 did pay out each way bets about the first 5 in that race.

Having said that, I did enjoy the returns from . . .

  • Well that was a nice day at Ascot on Friday.

Permian was a bet I became only more confident about once Benbatl won a big race on Thursday. That was because Permian had previously beaten Benbatl. Despite an inexplicably poor run in the Derby at Epsom, I stuck by Permian and my 7/1 tip delivered a gutsy, battling win.

People sometimes ask why they should follow me on Twitter @betonsportstips Well, having already sent out my Friday tips an hour before Benbatl won yesterday, I was able to tweet to members that my first tip on Friday had winning . . .

  • People sometimes ask why I bang on about a horse having experience at the racecourse in question. And why I go on about horses dropping in class of race.

I am always on the lookout for both. Take a look at our most impressive winners so far this week.

Ribchester was a proven Group 1 winner and a previous winner at Ascot. On the same day, the hugely impressive Lady Aurelia won for us at 7/2. She was a proven winner over the same course and distance. She won there a year earlier.

Qemah, our value price winner on . . .

  • Day 1 on Tuesday saw us win with Ribchester and Lady Aurelia - both value in the market at 11/10 and 7/2 on the day. The odds improved between me offering those two as win selections, and them coming home first. They each won in style.

Lady Aurelia blew my mind. Whoosh! A winner in style for American trainer Wesley Ward. Nap landed.

As was the each way Nap in the same race. Last year's winner of the King's Stand Stakes, Profitable, was my 16/1 each way Nap and that one followed Lady Aurelia home. How . . .

  • Punters must always look out for the best deals on offer. That is not always the best price, but the best deal.

For example.... for two races each day of the Royal Ascot meeting, Paddy Power are offering your money back as a so called 'free bet' if your horse finishes second, third or fourth behind a winning SP favourite. So if you are taking on the favourite in those races, it may be worth placing your bet with them - even allowing for the fact that a different bookie might be offering bigger odds about your selection.

    So let's . . .
