Royal Ascot delivered me eight winners across the five days, plus a few each way placed punts at odds of up to 28/1. So a decent Ascot. Not a great one, but not a bad one either. Seven of those eight winners were priced odds against, including winners at 11/1, 10/1 and 9/1.

At the prices on offer when the selections were sent to members, and in order of appearance, my Royal Ascot winners at VG Tips were:- Blue Point 9/1, LagostoVegas 11/1, Expert Eye 9/1, Hunting Horn 13/2, Stradivarius (NAP) 9 . . .

  • It’s a long time since I came across such a non story receving so much publicity. I refer to the revelation that is the planned England starting 11 for their match against Panama.

The usually very cautious assistant to manager Gareth Southgate was careless when carrying a piece of paper with the names on it. Photographers were able to capture the image. What followed was some utter hogwash from players past and present about how sports journalists should not print those details.

    1. It is their job to do so. They would be failing in their job if they . . .

Hunting Horn won for us on Thursday despite losing a shoe in running and being reported to be lame on arrival home. It was a gripping finish to the Gold Cup at Ascot and a super ride by Frankie Dettori, his 60th career winner at Royal Ascot.

There was a time a few years ago when I doubted the future of Dettori. He lost his way personally and was ditched by the then all conquering Godolphin operation for which he had ridden so very many Group class winners.

Frankie is a moody character. Without wishing to enter into stereotypes, of . . .

We got a fine tune out of our punting at Royal Ascot on Thursday.

Stradivarius was a gutsy winner of a thrilling finish to the feature race of the day, the Gold Cup. That truly was Frankie Dettori riding at his best. The 9/4 on offer when VG Tips members were advised yesterday was a decent price. The SP was only 7/4. If you were not able to watch the finish to that race, try and find it online. It's a corker.

Ryan Moore had another good day at the Ascot office including when winning for members . . .

  • Luck can get you a long way in a World Cup. But only so far.

Portugal were fortunate to get a draw in the best game of the tournament so far, that 3-3 draw against Spain.

Today Portugal scored early but were hanging on to that 1-0 winning margin up to the end of their match against Morocco - who had plenty of chances to score themselves.

Ronaldo was 16/1 to be top scorer at the World Cup before the first match took place. He is now the favourite after scoring four goals in Portugal's opening two . . .

The first race on Wednesday saw us protect our stake when, in a very tight finish, Shades of Blue was narrowly beaten into third in an exciting and very close three way finish. Selected as an each way play when 13/2, that way you not only got your stake back but also a little profit. Even at SP odds of 5/1, you protected your stake.

Remember, profitable punting over the course of 12 months is as much about not giving your stake money to the bookie as it is backing 20/1 winners of the Derby.

    In race . . .

I send my analysis and selections for Wednesday just as the second race has finished on Tuesday. Nice and early so that you have more time to study what I have to say. And please do read the analysis.

Calyx won the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, second ever time on a racecourse. So I think it safe to say this is one to go into your notebooks and a horse which will be winning a Group 1 race this season or next. Impressive.

Sergei Prokofiev was third in that race.

    Accidental Agent was a surprise 33/1 winner of the . . .

I know some people who actually bet on the colour of the hat that the Queen will wear on each day of Royal Ascot. But then I also know someone who used to bet on two flies crawling up a window or, one crazy day, which of the four of us could kick a football the furthest distance across the River Thames - without any thought of how the winner of the bet would recover the balls. I lost, thankfully.

I am selective with my selections, including at Ascot. It's tempting to bet on loads of horses but that way . . .

  • So the World Cup has begun and what have we learned so far?

Cristiano Ronaldo is reliable at penalty taking, great at free kicks and perfect at diving. Nobody cons referees like Ronaldo. He has it off to a fine art.

Something Gerard Pique should have known only too well before he went close to Ronaldo just outside the penalty area and in the dying minutes of the thrilling 3-3 draw between Spain and Portugal.

Pique offered Ronaldo the opportunity to fall down, pretending there had been contact and so fooling a gullible ref for the second time in . . .
