Every owner, every racehorse trainer has their day in the sun. I recall asking the multiple champion jump jockey if punters should follow the form of any one particular stable. If a particular trainer is firing home winner after winner, should us punters back that trainers horses blindly.

Tony McCoy said that while the form of a trainer is an important consideration for punters, the simple fact is that the form of a trainer can change for the worse at any time, and for reasons none of us can understand.

The same applies with owners. There was a time not . . .

Although there are meetings elsewhere on Thursday, the quality race meeting is at the home of flat racing, Newmarket.

If you can ever get to a race meeting there, do so. Almost as good is to go to the Newmarket gallops early one morning. That way you get to see some of the finest thoroughbred racehorses exercising for free. The Newmarket heath is public land so you can go there for a walk and enjoy seeing horses up close and personal. I haveenjoyed doing that in the past and plan to do so again in the future.

    The three day . . .

  • In my experience, World Cups tend to get better as the tournament progresses. This year in Russia has been no different. There has been plenty to talk about. VAR has divided opinion. England fans should welcome it, so far at least. The presence of VAR has reduced the overall amount of grappling of attackers at set pieces and England have done best at corners and free kicks.

This has been an exciting World Cup. The most eventful and included some truly great goals. But don't tell me the quality of the football played has been the purest. It hasn . . .

Why doesn't the Queen just get on with it?

It is time jockey Ryan Moore was officially Sir Ryan Moore. I wish I had kept a total of how many winners he has ridden to victory for me. How much profit he has so far delivered me over three decades.

He did it again on Friday. Well Done Fox was a 4/1 tip to members of VG Tips on Thursday night and the reasoning behind my thinking was explained clearly to them. Well Done Fox won the first race I selected for analysis on the day and the . . .

So Saxon Warrior has been entered for the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on Saturday. So soon after disappointing in both the English and Irish derbies. This is a bold move by trainer Aidan O'Brien. It could be an inspirational decision or backfire badly, so endangering his stud value later in life.

O'Brien may use stablemates Happily or Cliffs of Moher as pacemakers for Saxon Warrior on Saturday. Even so, Saxon Warrior will have to get the better of my 20/1 winner of the English Derby, Masar, and Group 2 winner Roaring Lion.

    By the way, some . . .

  • So here we are at the quarter final stage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. What have we learned and which pre-tournament fancies have so far paid off?

We have learned some things we sort of knew already. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo cannot win a World Cup for Argentina or Portugal on their own.

An era of glorious Spanish football has come to an end. Andres Iniesta joins his friend Xavi in retiring from International football and with it begins a period of rebuilding and deep thinking for Spain. Passing the ball a zillion times is all . . .

So last weekend went well for members of VG Tips.

6 winners from 8 races selected on Saturday and one winner from two races selected on Sunday.

Clearly the 22/1 winner of the Irish Derby had to be the highlight of my tipping day. Latrobe did the business for members, so ensuring that in June, we backed the winner of both the English and Irish derbies. Not bad.

I was also particularly pleased that Battle of Jericho justified my confidence. I confess to stopping what I was typing last Friday afternoon and immediately taking, on each way terms, the . . .

  • That was 93 minutes of my life I shall never get back.

I refer to the bore that was the game between Belgium reserves and England reserves, the former coming out on top by the only goal of the game. Clearly the Belgium goalscorer did not receive the memo saying that the object of the game was to make sure they did not win.

Belgium made 9 changes to their line up. England manager Gareth Southgate made 8 changes. A decision made before the outcome of games earlier that day that resulted in Japan being the immediate opponents for Belgium . . .

VG Tips members enjoyed backing my 20/1 winning NAP of the English Derby, Masar. This weekend sees the Irish Derby staged at the Curragh. Masar is not there and the race is not as strong as the English version, but it is a retrieval mission for Saxon Warrior, who was so disappointing at Epsom.

The racing at the Curragh over the weekend is dominated by the master trainer, Aidan O'Brien. The Coolmore operation has so very many of the best thoroughbred racehorses in Ireland. Racing is in the O'Brien blood and he runs a tight ship. Now . . .
