  • One non runner and one winner on Friday. Tabaraak, an 11/2 selection 24 hours ago, won nicely at SP odds of 5/1.

The Ayr Gold Cup meeting on Saturday has fallen victim to a waterlogged course. This is a major blow for such a racecourse and those who work there.

There have been accusations that the course is too blame for the chain of events that led to this, and criticism of how Ayr racecourse handled announcements of the racing being abandoned three days running.

The weather was the chief culprit. There is debate over how the turf . . .

  • Football is so often about passion. And no games come more passionate than big city derbies.

This weekend we have the Rangers v Celtic fixture in Scotland. At odds of 4/6, many punters will fancy backing Celtic to win.

On Sunday, in Sheffield, we have the Steel City derby. In May of 2016, Sheffield Wednesday were one match away from putting two divisions between them and neighbouring United. But now, following the Blades promotion to the Championship, the so called Steel City Derby is back.

Over many years I have more often than not backed the draw in matches . . .

  • It's that time of the year already. When meetings are abandoned due to bad weather. It's still September!

You have to feel for those who run courses such as the one up at Ayr. They don't get too many big meetings staged there. Thursday was abandoned, Friday's meeting there is in doubt and, come Saturday, it is supposed to be the biggest day of racing all year at Ayr - Gold Cup day.

Here's hoping that goes ahead. Do have in mind if studying form for that meeting, it's proven soft or heavy ground liking . . .

  • 16/1 and 14/1 was available about Seahenge - our big price winner last Saturday.

That's not the first time this past flat season when an Aidan O'Brien trained outsider has won at a double figure price. One previous disappointing run does not mean you put a line through such a horse.

Seahenge impressed on debut and could be forgiven a poor second outing. But I saw enough about this one to know there was more to come and our winner was taken from first to last under a good ride by another member of that Irish family . . .

  • At the time of writing, Spud won for us at Chester and the early price of 4/7 was likely the best on offer all day. Tomyris returned us each way placed profit when running on well to finish third at Doncaster, but too late to catch the mentioned in despatches double figure priced winner, Music Box.

Saturday is the big day of the flat season in South Yorkshire. At Town Moor,   the St Leger is staged on ground that is drying out a bit (although showers are forecast during Saturday).

I have long enjoyed this race and the stage . . .

  • Well Thursday was as trappy as I suspected but we had the last laugh on the day. Thanks to the in form jockey Andrea Atzeni, Laugh A Minute came from last to first to win for members of VG Tips. Some of my followers took the early price of 16/1. The past the post price was still a good one at 12/1.

It's always worth keeping an eye out for a jockey and trainer combination that is in good form. Roger Varian and Atzeni are certainly that right now. I keep that in mind when studying the . . .

  • The winning midweek tips included all four correct predictions in the Championship. Sheffield Wednesday at 21/20, Leeds at 8/11, Sheffield United at 29/20 and the draw between Wolves and Bristol City at 14/5. In League 1, Shrewsbury won for members of VG Tips at odds of 11/8.

In total it was 5 winning tips from 8 selections. That'll do nicely, especially at those odds.

After some European action in midweek, Premier League teams return to domestic action this weekend and football welcomes back Roy Hodgson. He's the new boss at Selhurst Park.

  • I'd first like to welcome aboard, or welcome back, Michael, James, Jonathan and Roger. Perhaps they subscribed to my latest newsletter, released on Wednesday and available free to one and all. It is good to have you along.

Those who are returning lapsed members will likely recall how I work. Newbies will no doubt pick things up as we go along in our mission to beat the bookie over a period of many months. Something I have been doing, year on year, since 1998.

Some days there are days of racing offering several potential value bets, win and . . .

  • The flat season nears its end. It's been a good one for members of VG Tips but I am looking forward to the jumps season proper beginning in a few weeks.

Before that we have the St. Leger at Doncaster on Saturday and, at the start of October, the Prix De l'Arc de Triomphe in France.

For the St. Leger quite a gamble is taking place on Defoe. Twice a winner on soft ground (including for VG Tips members), Defoe should enjoy the soft conditions underfoot at Doncaster.

Heavy rain is forecast for there on Wednesday, and showers . . .

  • So the first Premier League manager to be sacked award goes to....Frank De Boer. He's been fired by Crystal Palace after only four games (and no goals). The Chairman wanted to change the way Palace played football. A club famed for its 'up and at 'em' style of play was put in the hands of a coach who believes in total football.

That's like asking me to place bets on the plethora of TV shows bookies want you to bet on. I don't even know who the people are on so called 'reality' shows. So I . . .
